It’s not nice when Lemmygraders taint decent instances. Mrhmph.

1·2 天前Where are you getting your number
A different page on Wikipedia.
But yes, checking a couple more pages there, I do get the same 4 million as a number.
That would be already 20 % of the 20 million. Assumed they are count in that number. But still, 90% are something else. (Also, I’ve always heard about 60 million as number of Stalin’s victims. It feels weird that someone would inflate numbers and get to 20 million when 60 million is often quoted).
Asked them all personally? 🤣
No, by the time I was born, they were all dead. That’s what dying causes.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Bloomberg: People need a reality check. Despite common assumptions, traveling by bus, subway or train is actually safer than driving.English
2·5 天前Having worked at the railways, I would kindly request you don’t mention what you just did.
Every time we read in some newspaper that someone had died, we knew that within the next about three days, a colleague or two will get traumatized by having to see someone’s last facial expression right before a horrible clattering sound coming from the bottom of the locomotive. It was a rare exception that a newspaper mentioned someone having jumped in front of the train and there not being at least one person who got inspired by that article. And then, a long time without such accidents or almost no such accidents. Until there’s an article mentioning this, and then there will be a couple in the next few days. Again.
And mind you, this is in a country with 5 million people. If it’s written in a paper with tens of millions of readers, the article’s killcount will be increased in proportion to the population difference.
The train drivers were telling me how they still sometimes wake up in the middle of a night because of someone having used them for a suicide two decades earlier. That they can still crystal clearly remember the last expression on the person’s face.
Suicide is always an incorrect solution, because there’s always a way out, and there will always be people who will be devastated. But at least, if someone absolutely must do the mistake of killing themself, then please, at least don’t wreck anyone else’s sanity by using them as an instrument for your death.
I’m not sure if a post on the Forumverse will cause someone to alter a suicide plan to include a train, but it’s always a possibility. And the results on others’ minds are not nice to see.

2·5 天前Weird.
I know a lot of carbrains, a and I have heard this precisely zero times in my life.
They do say it’s expensive, though. And then the “I have children, I therefore couldn’t survive without a car”, while in reality children are in reality an obvious argument against using a car.
But yeah, the argument about expenses is funny.
The total cost of owning and using a car is around 300 € per month. (And my parents say they are paying aboout 400 €)
A public transportation ticket costs some 85 € per.month.It’s amazing that people are willing to pay 300 € to save 85 €. And I woild say that’s an argument I hear from at least 30 % of my city’s adult population.
(But “dangerous” is an argument I have never heard against public transportation, in any case)

1·7 天前If they are in that number, then the about 1 million dead nazi soldiers are about 10% of “padding”. If you reduce one million from “about 20 million”, you still have about 20 million. If there’s padding, it disappears within the rounding error.
So, was your argument that “I assume they were padding the stats without actually checking if they did, therefore they have lied, therefore they have lied on other things as well”?

1·7 天前About 1 to 2 million. 1.1 million soldiers dead on Nazi Germany’s eastern front, plus some 1 million “MIA + POW”, of which some amount might be dead as well?
Why was this important for you to know?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does each country have a book/library of the laws of the land that a commoner can consult to check if they're about to do something illegal?English
7·7 天前I would be surprised if there was a country that don’t have their all laws set in the paper form.
But, regarding Finland: You’re thinking of http://finlex.fi/ .
There’s for example this gem, telling about how you should take care of the hops trellis the law requires you to maintain! :)
(Please don’t tell anyone, but I do not actually have a hops trellis! I’m breaking the law.)
It’s also helpful if you want to know how to let your pigs to run in an acorn forest. Or if your bees escape and land inside someone else’s tree.Also, the beginning words of our Criminal Code are a bit, well, outdated? Here goes: https://www.finlex.fi/en/legislation/1889/39-001?language=swe&highlightId=798156&highlightParams={"type"%3A"BASIC"%2C"search"%3A"rikoslaki"}
(I’m linking the Swedish-language versions because I believe a machine translator does a better job translating to European languages from Swedish than from Finnish)

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Could this type of drone be used to save soldiers in Myrnohrad?English
9·10 天前If they can fly with such a noisy thing, they can also be rescued using land-based vehicles. If you are evacuated in a device like this, you will absolutely get shot in the process. Or a faster FPV drone will catch this one, with the person having nowhere to escape.
Much easier to hit an aerial target of this size than one obscured by scenery.
