Depends a bit what you want exactly.

You can get the same with trueNAS (or hexOS which is an easy to use wrapper), or Unraid. But that needs more than a bit of tinkering (in my opinion)

Yeah you were basically right. Because societies decided it would be. I mean gold has some practical applications but nothing that would justify it’s price.
