…I don’t think I’ve ever met a man in real life that ate a fad diet. They eat hamburger helper and take out.

11·6 hours agoIt could be better, but even the person with crippling medical debt lives luxuriously relative to the global norm. I think it could be better, but I think it’s important to understand exactly how much we have.
Where we got it is also important. I think it’s important to understand the exact role that weapons manufacturers and corporate chronies play in bolstering our lifestyles. At the end of the day, I don’t think the average citizen wants to know.

17·7 hours agoThey absolutely are.
Let’s say I get into a car accident or have cancer. Treatment involves expensive chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and multiple rounds of major surgery.
If I’m in the poorest 10%-30% of the population, the care is provided free of charge. If I’m poor-but not that poor- I have the option to receive the expensive treatment and just not pay. It will just negatively impact my credit score, but I can also get away with “paying what I can afford.”
…this is just one example. Everything from our food to our electronics are subsidized by the government. Most of the resources are more or less taken from poorer nations. If they don’t play ball, we withhold aid, bribe officials, loan their enemies weapons, or finance a coup.

2·9 hours ago…I think men would be more interested in having a child without a woman that can seize both the child and your paycheck on a whim. A sperm donor is a lot cheaper than a surrogate.

1·10 hours agoIf we had sustainable practices, at least of 3rd of the people in the United States and Western Europe would have a standard of living similar to the people in 3rd world country. This is assuming we don’t compensate for things by exploiting more vulnerable populations.
I personally think this is a decent trade-off, but the people my country would end up exploiting would probably disagree.

34·10 hours agoI feel as though the low standard of living of the average Chinese national is a more decisive factor. The resources that could be spent on public welfare programs are spent on research and subsidies instead.

1·10 hours agoI had the same opinion, but it changed after playing Doom (2016, Xbox One) and Doom Eternal (2020, Xbox Series X) back to back. The difference was dramatic.
I still believe we are reaching a point where Moore’s law is hitting a fundamental limit, but only time will tell how things will pan out. My guess is that consoles will need to get bigger to get better.

1·11 hours agoKarma is just a means to exploit perceived peer pressure to reinforce desired behavior and change how people think. The desired behavior from the perspective of the platform isn’t limited to engagement. There are more subtle forms of monetization, such as propoganda and “peer”-to-peer advertising.

1·11 hours agoI don’t see this information as being particu relevant. There are various boards and committees where half the people are government and half of them are from Google. From what I gather, Google more or less functions as the mass surveillance arm of the government, so a Government App serving this purpose would be redundant.

2·1 day agoReddit isn’t terrible when a user adjusts what they are suggested, but the system they use to ban people pretty much sucks.
If I respond to a user that is suggesting the unnecessary euthanasia of a relatively healthy cat with, “Great. Now it is okay to k*** relatively healthy cats. This is a positive development,” I will get a warning for promoting the abuse of animals. Four of these strikes over any period of time will lead to a permanent ban.
…it’s not sustainable. Since there isn’t any human oversight, I have to heavily censor what I say to avoid being banned from the platform. I’m using an actual example. My appeal was denied.

3·1 day agoAnother thing to consider is the fact that people can form false memories. A person might know at the time of exposure that the misinformation is misinformation, but he might misremember it as a fact after repeated exposure.

3·1 day agoI just signed up, and it’s confusing. I used lemmy.world because it seemed like it was the only means to get my registration approved. It wasn’t clear whether or not this account can still view and interact with other “instances”, so I went with the website that had the largest userbase.

I wouldn’t want to shut down the simulation, but it would depend on the energy expenditure. A hospital could theoretically save more people if they allocated fifty million dollars per patient. A person’s right to life is contingent on the cost to maintain it.
