I’m not an English teacher, but one thing I never get about education in general and English specifically is the need to push kids to read books that they will absolutely find uninteresting. I really feel like kids are expected to give a lot of unpaid labour, cuz someone said so in some office somewhere.

Teacher here. Sometimes we put a lot of planning into a unit and resist trashing it when it needs to happen. Possibly she perfected it in 2003 when it was very topical.

Also grade 9 is far too old to spend a unit on 9/11 and not like some skill the students will need in their life. But then again, grade 9 English teachers to this day do a unit on Animal Farm, which arguably is equally pointless.

Not even badposting now, the reason cops historically ignore this issue is that its often white, chud, and petit bourgeois. If lots of poor black people were modding their bike, there would be public campaigns and mandatory minimum prison sentences.

TBH I used to quietly hate ppl who did Magic or LARP back in the day, which feels silly now as they were hurting no one, and in the 90s they were more progressive than normies.

Empathy can be really hard. One needs to spend a fair amount of energy just feeling what the other person is going through, and the mutual aid part can take even more. To go and question the reason for one’s material comfort is more than most people are willing to do.

Congrats on finding your way out of it. I do have this belief that most white Westoids are absolute sociopaths who have learned away their ability to feel normal empathy.

Or maybe the bigger picture was just that I still bought the idea that the US were the good guys and that we were stabilizing the world and spreading democracy
