US Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer is facing opposition from progressives and a new group of Democratic lawmakers-elect to become Senate majority leader, in a rift that underscores the party’s divide on Israel.

Senators-elect Adam Hamilton of Kansas, Troy Jackson of Maine, and Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan all said on the campaign trail that they will oppose Schumer as Senate majority leader.

Meanwhile, progressive groups have said the Democrats’ sweeping midterm election victory on Tuesday should start the process of new lawmakers leading the party.

In February 2026, Schumer said that one of his most important jobs as Senate minority leader was to “fight for aid to Israel”. “I have many jobs as leader… and one is to fight for aid to Israel, all the aid that Israel needs,” he told a group of pro-Israel Jewish leaders at the time.

Schumer is Jewish-American and has received support from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac). But recent polling shows that he is out of step with the majority of Jewish voters in the US, who lean heavily Democratic.

If it’s not him it will be another aipac ghoul. Gotta love democrats. They aren’t even sworn in yet and they have wasted no time to let the American people know they are gonna be a major disappointment. Could’ve at least waited to January and lied but I guess they are feeling honest today.

it’d be kinda deeply ironic if, after all the shit liberals gave conservatives about struggling to elect their Majority leaders, they end up in the exact same gridlock.

He actually will, in the exact same way that Hillary and Biden were able to.

Party Leadership sets the primary rules and has already stated in open court that their position is that they have a perfect right to stack the deck however they choose.

Eh house democrats are actually pissed at Schumer though for his capitulation for nothing with the shutdown earlier. Plenty have been reportedly calling for his primary in 2028 including members who aren’t progressives. The party won’t as be unified against a challenger as you may think

(I think even the people who like Schumer’s capitulation don’t like how obvious he is with it)
