Question my friend brought up. If people wanted to, could they not get say 5 or 10 folks together to buy a large ish property, and then live on that? Thats basically a “commune”. His argument is “people can do that right now but they dont, therefore this system wouldn’t work”.
Short Answer: probably not! Mostly because money and credit scores.
Long Answer: it depends on a lot of variables. For one thing, many places actually close to amenities (groceries, schools, etc) have rules about how many people can live in a given defined property. In fact my city just passed a law upping this number to allow for denser urban housing construction. So either you’re limited in your group size—thus limiting the funds you can bring to the project—or you are forced to search much farther out for a property to purchase. This means either dealing with greatly reduced amenities, or not being able to go after those properties at all, because…
I am assuming for the sake of this argument that we are discussing the people who ‘cannot build nests’; the homeless and very poor. This will mean all of them will most likely have no or few working vehicles, and a distant property will absolutely require reliable working vehicles to access.
They will also most likely have poor credit scores, and so unless they bring in a cash offer for the whole shebang, the people who own the property they want to buy will refuse to deal with them, as they will most likely find it difficult if not impossible to secure a loan.
And that brings us to cost. Closer in town, prices are high; you’ll be dropping minimum $500,000 in my area and more likely closer to $1mil+ if you want to buy a decent-sized (i.e. everyone can have at least a little space to themselves) property. Out further, the prices drop per square foot, yes, but in addition to the ‘reduced or no amenities’ part of things, the lots are bigger, and so still pricy overall (I know of one 20-acre near my grandparents’ farm that went for $800,000, which was a steal, and then there was another 80-acre plot nearby for $1mil). That’s a lot of money for even 5-10 normal people to put down; for people with no income or barely any it’s close to an impossible amount. If we up it to 20 or 30 people and find a property in the middle of nowhere, maybe?
Communes are generally started by either a group of like-minded people with money to pool, or by a charismatic scam artist who has collected the entire life savings of, again, people with money.
I have a lot of experience with this as an aunt of mine’s hobby seems to be joining the second type, and one of my friend’s grandmothers helped finance one of the first type. She got together with a bunch of her friends and fellow church-members to create a place with more stable and affordable housing for their less-affluent members.
So the final answer is this does, in fact, happen; it just happens in the classes with more money and capital to leverage.
I am not necessarily a fan of communes, but it sounds like your friend is ignorant about the many communes that exist currently.
When humans do build their own nest, the govt comes in and destroys it and throws out all of their meager possessions.
Never stop never stopping
also their inferior heat regulation and insulation properties
I mean these clowns can’t even fly what are they doing?
It’s actually quite cheap to build a house if you can put on some of the work yourself. I talked to an architect specialized in self building houses and she said you’d build a nice house for 60k€.
Gotta buy the place where you’re allowed to build it of course…
That’s not cheap. Where are people ment to get both the money to build the house, and the land to do it on, and all the paperwork before they can do anything.
Ooh that expensive paperwork, I forgot about that.
/s
If you have no money then no you cannot build or buy a house, who would have known… Guess instead of borrowing 60k you’ll have to pay rent for the rest of your life.
But it doesn’t matter, you don’t sound like someone being able to build more than a sand castle.
It must be nice to have been born into money, so you have no idea how the real world works.
When you go to a bank and ask to borrow money they often won’t give you it if they don’t feel like they’re going to get their money back. If it didn’t work like that then obviously everyone would borrow money and buy their own house.
It must be hard not being able to discuss things without inventing situations and getting angry by them.
So angry you have to type it down too! 😂🥱
I’m sure that the family who just got kicked out of their home because they couldn’t keep up with their rent and inflation would greatly benefit from that information.
Go to moscow hexbear 1 day user.
Do you think I’m a Russian operator because I’m a new hexbear user?
Or a tankie shill. Come back when you have something constructive to add to the conversation.
They were adding to the conversation, as well as being relevant to the original post. You need to chill with that bashing shit, it’s rude af
The banned account?
No I don’t think I’ll “chill” bashing the fach.
I think I’ll block you too as you’re probably the same person anyways lol 😂, you’re not very bright.
Obnoxious
What was your expectation, when you commented on a drawing that highlights a systemic issue, the fact that private property is considered more important than the rights of people to have shelter, with a suggestion that anyone can just build their own home with the 60k they have laying around? It’s an interesting observation, but in no way relevant to the post you’re commenting on.
Ooh ban evading? You does not sound like a newcomer.
Ha ha Blocked! 😂
Suit yourself, you seem to know more about me than myself
Hmm, I guess they have to control it somehow. In US the land is super cheap, but even if you want to build a house yourself, you still have to goto contractors for materials and things, and everything ends up being more expensive than what a company can buy them for. So you end up with around the same price as a new house you can buy even if you save a bit of labor. Only people I’ve seen do it are people already in construction industry and can get materials for similar prices and use their connections for things
That’s what I thought, and the person I spoke to is an architect. Maybe laws ate different in France, but I doubt it.
Houses here are like 400k€ Minimum so that matters ofc.
I’d love just having a community built somewhere, with people helping everyone. 🤗😌Is all.
Yeah, as someone who has moved so much, I miss community the most, and it looks like you can’t really build a community. Specially not like the one you were born into. Where we grew up people did help each other, for houses you’d still need some people that are qualified and experienced, and people can chime in a bit of materials and labor. But when hiring help you still hired from your community.
And when some quality of life improvements comes whole community would do it at once. Like I remember we moving from ventless oven to oven that vents outside and we got some of the tools as a community and tool turn using it so everyone improved their ovens for cheap
I’m not even saying you’re wrong, but this is exactly the line of thinking that leads to

That leads to a big house 😂?! ✊🏼
a big cheap house, no less!🤑💯
