Players of “Corinthians” hold the flag of the USSR during the “red match” (O Jogo Vermelho) – a historic match against their arch-rival “Palmeiras”, organized to raise funds for the Communist Party of Brazil. São Paulo, October 13, 1945.

All proceeds from ticket sales (approximately 114,464 cruzeiros) were donated to the communists’ election campaign. Thanks in part to this financial support, the Communist Party of Brazil conducted a successful campaign, electing its leader, Luís Carlos Prestes, to the Senate and getting 14 deputies elected to parliament.

Corinthians and their main organized fan group (Gaviōes da Fiel) are still pretty based. I always have a fun time remembering their videos beating the shit out of bolsonaristas who were blocking the roads, just before their attempted coup. Sócrates and the Corinthian Democracy still go strong.

Palmeiras would be another matter today because the team is now owned by a big capitalist. So I don’t think something like a red game would be possible today.
