At least 126 people have been the target of Chinese transnational repression, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council [MAC] said Monday in response to reports that President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) son and his family have been surveilled by an agent allegedly working for China.

The MAC said in a press release that China has repeatedly jeopardized the safety of Taiwanese and their families, adding that the council had recorded at least 140 cases of Chinese transnational repression.

China’s tactics target not only Taiwan officials but the entire Taiwanese population, seeking to create a chilling effect, the council said.

The MAC said the government planned to amend the Anti-infiltration Act to criminalize transnational repression. Working as an agent for a foreign agent is a federal felony under US law, but there is no law against such an action in Taiwan, the council added.
