A neuroscientist and artist argue there’s no such thing as a color.

Can’t access the paywalled article, but this tennis ball is blue.

I feel like the article might be more interesting if, instead of a neuroscientist talking about how context changes how we perceive colors, we got an anthropologist or etymologist talking about how different cultures’ understanding of color differs from one another and how it has changed over time. It seems to me that it’s a failing of language, not our ability to determine an approximation of an object’s color. It’s not green or yellow. It’s tennis ball.

Color is definitely a wavelength. The names we give colors like “yellow” or “blue” are massive ranges of wavelengths. That’s the problem here… the ball can be both green and yellow because no body asked if it was yellow-green, they only gave a binary option: “is a tennis ball yellow or green”. It’s neither. It’s between the two.

You’ve proven my point… they’re all the same color, they’re perceived differently. Therefore it’s a wavelength.

In the case of different lighting, the measured wavelength is literally different, but we will perceive the actual color.

Color is not wavelength! And we’ve known this for a long time. But the problem is that we want something that is an empirical, measurable number that’s outside of an observer, that’s a thing out there in the world, that would be the same number regardless of who looks at it. And color, at its core, is not that.

I did in fact read the article. It’s dumb. Color is a wavelength. They’re conflating language with color.

They specifically are not. The whole point is that your brain perceives color based its perception of the lighting conditions. If color was strictly wavelength then that wouldn’t be true.

No, it’s not. Nothing on that graphic is purple. Definitionally, purple is an interference of red and blue/violet light. You just don’t know what you’re talking about. Magenta isn’t a wavelength. Grey isn’t a wavelength. Salmon isn’t a wavelength. Impossible colors aren’t wavelengths. The only colors that are wavelengths are pure, perfectly saturated spectral colors.

Lime. Evenly between what English calls Green and Yellow.

For what it’s worth, I call the color between yellow and green “chartreuse”. I think of lime as a pretty well-saturated and somewhat lighter green.
