I think the main source of ambiguity was the coinage of “antisemitismus” now “antisemitism” which was an application of a purely linguistic term into the ethnic context of oppressing Jewish people. Which is the source of the argument that antisemitism only refers to prejudice against Jews. If you accept that, then the term is really a confusing misnomer, even if it’s usage/meaning has been consistent.
