Small groups of fans protested outside the venue, with some of them having sold their tickets in protest. Other concertgoers said they were sticking by the musician. A tearful Sheeran told the crowd: “Everyone is telling me to cancel, and I’m feeling all of my friends and family and people I know abandon me and I look at the end of the week and I see 50,000 people who haven’t abandoned.”

Ed Sheeran making it all about himself underscores how misplaced his priorities are.

Whoops, looks like he’s reached his chapel perilous where the choice was to back down and admit he chose money over morals… Or double down and believe he was right to cut Maklemore to protect the tour’s revenue and “not to get involved in politics” .

Now he’s deluding himself that he can replace genuine connection from friends and family with the parasocial relationship from fans of his work.

Here’s my prediction, if he’s further isolated he will turn to whatever vice(s) he is predisposed to and use them for numbing the loneliness he feels when not on stage. Then he’ll follow the one or more of the usual arcs for Hollywood celebrities: burn out, private crash out, public freak out, rehab/psychological therapies, overdose, retirement into obscurity, etc.

The Hollywood machine will ingest, consume him, and spit out the leftovers because that’s all he’ll have left.
