stop a moment and appreciate how insulting this shit is. it should say “capitalism” but instead of acknowledging that the goal of every corporation under this system is to MAXIMIZE PROFIT, we get this idealist garbage.

One of the really interesting bits of reading Capital for me was when Marx lays out that this is inevitable because they must continuously cuts costs. They really don’t make it like they used to! We’re all too poor to afford if they did!
I don’t buy much other than food, but I do see it there and have since before the pandemic, but now the options have largely disappeared. Frozen broccoli is the thing I lament the most. It used to be (in the1980s or so) that frozen broccoli was almost all florets with very little stalk. Now my local store brand has the option of broccoli OR broccoli florets and if you get regular, it is 90% stalk. Florets are 30% stalk, which is not how it used to be and feels like false advertising until you look at the fine print that it may contain ‘some’ stalk. A bag of fresh potatoes seems to have more bad and bruised spuds, lettuce seems to arrive more wilted and damaged. I acknowledge that things like lettuce and corn have fewer bugs, but that probably means I’m eating more pesticides. So I go to the local farm stand and get a big beautiful white onion, take it home, cut into it, and the entire core is rotten, slimy, and brown. This didn’t used to feel so hard.
