CEO Bro: “For every dollar we earn, we’ll give 10% back to your community!”
Frustrated Citizen: “That’s called paying taxes, idiot. You should have been doing that the whole time.”
I guess if you’re betting on the AI bubble popping, you could take the deal and bet the data center gets shut down after a few years.
If they really gave a shit, they’d build dams in unpopulated areas and use the water for cooling and power generation.
Japan was doing even better last I heard and installing underwater near thermal vents for power and using natural circulation for cooling.
It’s actually helps the environment because it produces a milder zone than the vent while providing structure for sea life to establish permanent living zones like natural coral would.
Anytime a data center is built in a populated area, it’s because it’s cheaper and they don’t give a fuck about humans.
Like, we still don’t need all these data centers, but we do need some. There’s no reason not to do it in a safe way that doesn’t fuck us or the planet over.
Dams are bad for ecosystems. It would be much better to build in deserts shaded by solar panels to power them and use geothermal for cooling.

use geothermal for cooling.
That’s gotta be some time of typo, but I can’t figure out what you could have meant.
But dams help spread ground water retention allowing for aquifers to refill while getting filtered along the way.
Not like every dam is a good one, but they’re beneficial in a lot of places.
