i was thinking today about how, maybe in the 1930s, i could almost imagine the kind of mind that sympathizes with the ukranian nationalists far right movement. they see the rise of the german project after spain (neutral/tolerated by the atlanticist alliance) and italy. it purports to be this liberation. they’re not terribly bright and don’t have any material analysis, so they get swept up in the fervor of tradition and patriotism etc etc. that shit may have worked on me if i was an illiterate 20 year old surrounded by collapsing institutions.
of course, the german fascists are eventually crushed militarily and their barely-a-secret generalplan ost is revealed as a manipulation to destabilize the slavs, poles, etc by training up death squads and informants from within their own ranks to turn them against each other and make their eventual extermination that much easier so that the germans can have everything for themselves.
so what kind of fucking mind is like, “oh yeah, those guys who got duped by the nazis into putting on their costumes and exterminating their own neighbors were actually our national heroes, actually.” i mean, jesus christ. nobody should be falling for this again.
Modern Ukrainian nationalism isn’t really about the nation, but about “joining the white people’s club”. In this paradigm collaboration with Nazis is a positive, because that is presented as “being recognized by the Western civilization as one of their own”. For the same reason Petlyura isn’t glorified as much, even though he was much less of a genocidal shithead.
