Yayoi Kusama (草間 彌生, Kusama Yayoi; 22 March 1929 – 14 August 2026) was a Japanese contemporary artist who worked primarily in sculpture and installation. She was also active in painting, performance, video art, fashion, poetry, fiction, and other arts. Her work was based in conceptual art and shows some attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, art brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, and was infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content.
Hey, an artist I’m vaguely familiar with. One of the mirror rooms is in the Phoenix Art Museum. It’s dark with some hanging string lights that makes it look you’re in a field of stars. They make sure to have somebody near the installation at all times. Somebody I took to see it thought it was a little more infinite that it was and smacked right into a wall and immediately there was someone checking on us. Must be a frequent occurrence.
I had wondered what her other works were like and looked them up years ago. Among other works, there’s lots of objects just absolutely covered in penises, like a row boat. Go check them out.
I could 100% see myself walking into the walls in there.
