No shit. Plastic is a petroleum product.

Records represent a tiny fraction of the petroleum consumed, and are durablle long-lived items. This is meaningless in comparison to gasoline consumption or single-use plastic consumption.

In fact, the production of a record may have lower ghg emissions than streaming services, after a certain number of plays.

This seems like some stupid “Ha stupid eco protester! See, your precious records are also made of oil!” Stupid propaganda from the oil lobby.

It shifts focus away from how terrible they are back to you for enjoying… records this time.

In numbers, greenhouse gasses caused by cars, travel, industrial shipping: 99.9999% Greenhouse gasses caused by vinyl: Minuscule.

No, eff that, I want to keep the conversation on things like people needing gas to drive and how we should be shifting away from that, or natural gas waterheaters/furnaces, or plane travel. Things that actually move the needle. Oil companies would love us to be fighting over vinyl records and straws so we stop talking about actual polluters.

I didnt mind the shift away from plastic straws/bags. If it keeps em outa the ocean and away from animals I think its a good thing. It definitely felt performative in a way though

Which to be clear, is a good thing we mostly switched to compostable. I’m all for it. Just on the list of priorities it’s like 10,000th in line, and damn did it nicely distract from the major polluters.

At least plastic straws are disposable. Records are meant to be kept for decades, and replayed thousands of times.
