I cannot adequately express the disappointment I felt reading about the hit 2023 Myosuki visual novel. As it turns out, you actually can sell me on the premise of a chill otokonoko visual novel, but you cannot sell me on an otokonoko visual novel in which the protagonist is a man. Excuse me, comrade, do you expect my self-insert protag to commit heterosexual acts with these ladies?! Not a goddamn fucking chance.
I know there’s probably a lot of considerations wrt the CGs and stuff, it’s not just the script and retooling a game such as the 2023 Myosuki VN for a woman (or god forbid, other gender?!) protag would not be a small task. ‘Ash, you should just go dig up some yuri instead.’ But weh, though!! What I see in the hit 2023 VN is the opportunity for beautiful transgender yuri–utterly missed! A crime has been committed!!! I hate to see it! I don’t think that’s unreasonable!!
An enterprising VN enjoyer who is lest strict and silly than me could be having a blast, but my gay ass is left out in the cold. By the trans otokonoko dating sim VN. Which makes me sad.

I’m ngl the majority of these types of VNs are just male gaze transphobic PORN. Literally none of it is legit rep at all.
Oh look, “goonslop” again. “Masturbation is evil” rhetoric, on my bearsite…Also though I gotta say, I think this perspective on “legit rep” or whatever is not conducive to any joy. This is a hot topic because I also have this perspective often, but I truly respect the ability of people like Maghogthymaster or indeed Amelie Doree to take the scalpel to absolutely anything and retrieve queer joy from it. It’s something I’m casually observing. It’s not for everyone obviously (I am whining about just that in this post) and I’m not trying to imply it’s a personal failing to not critically analyse weird porn games, but it’s a cool rabbit hole imo.
I mean PORN as in cishet patriarchal garbage, I feel thats the only legit use of the word. And ngl your point on rep is valid but I dont really like trying to tediously extract joy out of shit made for cis men to crank their hogs to personally. A lot of anime smut doesnt really seen very queer friendly unless its like fanfic or something. Funny enough your very practical approach of “just on on ao3” mirrors me a decade ago, where I got SO sick of poor quality yuri and random reactionary gender bender manga, that I just went looking for stuff written by trans people. Relatable. I also think the needle is moving wrt trans and queer stuff in manga, though. Take Con Cafe Jou wa Koi wo Kiru, for example, which was briefly popular on tumblr and features a major trans woman character who rocks! Kind of a mid comic all around but after a decade of watching, tbh I think it’s getting better generally for queer rep.

The more I think about it though youre right, all the queerphobic losers online love to degrade queer sexuality as PORN PORN PORN 24/7, which also bleeds into real life and people get all sex negative especially towards queer people. I remember there was some random unhinged YouTube ad I got for tpusa where Kirk (rest in pain) was like “here I will talk about the PORN AGENDA of the wokes.
” and like that exact kinda sex negativity is pretty messed up so I’ll change my comments.

I think that’s a decent perspective to have, honestly. To me what’s most notable in this specific case is that the stereotypically gross, transphobic otokonoko genre of VN produced something nominally trans positive, maybe! I thought that was of interest because I’m a fuckin weirdo.
The state of trans rep, is actually!!! Well I would say it’s “poor but improving” in visual mediums like film and TV, broadly it depends on how you mean “trans rep”. A lot of people seem to mean “visually represented” but personally I was just looking for stuff (ideally but not always) written by trans people and featuring a trans protagonist. And honestly even outside of internet fic, the literature world is doing pretty good. I’ve read like ~75 novels with trans protagonists, and have maybe 100 more on my to-read. Also of course, lots of indie devs are weird trans perverts and so there’s a budding genre of visual novels with, say, t4t lesbianism, or stuff like that. Pretty chill, has grown hugely overall in the last decade.
