i had a 15 year old laptop like this. was low spec when i bought it, so it was never amazing. had to be plugged in to work because the battery was toast, couldn’t wake for shit and would take several minutes to be usable. struggled with just watching youtube videos, which was all i needed it for mostly. it was in a craft/repair space and i just wanted it to reference DIY videos.
i put mint on it just to see what would happen and it was like a new machine. the battery was still toast, but everything else was lightning fast.
proprietary OS are labor camps that chain your hardware to a bloated, expanding ball of iron called “shit code”. let your old pal free.
We have a non-profit shop in my town that does this. Just takes people’s old laptops and PCs then installs Linux on them and gives them to people who need them. All started because the founder worked at a domestic violence shelter and realized that most of the women didn’t have access to laptops for legal stuff.
I was trying to do that through our local repair cafe. Things kind of fell off organising it. I should get in touch with them again

I had a laptop and used it for almost 15 years. I gave up on it because power button didn’t work reliably and battery couldn’t hold a charge. But other than that, it worked good. Well once I installed Linux on it.
