      One of the weirdest feelings for me when I was last there was feeling boxed in. Because none of the streets are straight you can’t see as far around you as you can here

      Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to ride a bike through the Sydney CBD. I speak from personal experience. Sydney has nice bits, but the traffic! And they say rude things about Melbourne traffic which I think shows a serious lack of self awareness.

    I finished reading Enshitification by Corey Doctorow the other day and it was great to see him mention the fediverse, especially when I’m already on it. He was mostly talking about Mastodon though, I much prefer here.

    It’s nice to know a place like this has a lot fewer downward pressures to make it worse. No open source/FOSS project is going to be perfect but you can’t map the stages of enshitification to growth and funding cycles in the same way.

      Did you enjoy it? It’s been on my list for years but I partly feel like I know a lot of that stuff already so it might just be vaguely depressing…

        It was a good read. I read his last book Chokepoint Capitalism and I listen to a lot of the podcasts he appears on so I was already familiar with a lot of it, but there are some good points he highlights. It’s probably a good one if you haven’t ready any Doctorow before because it covers things more generally, whereas Chokepoint was more specifically about the outsized influence monopolies have thanks to mergers.

          I’ve worked in the corporate world, am painfully aware of the unstoppable enshitification machine. I’m kinda tempted to read books like this, but also know it will just make me disappointed.

            It is a sad read but it’s good to get a more formalised framework of how things get worse so you can identify it in other areas

    Gibson has been in and out of the bedroom wondering where her usual slave is. She’s very loving, but too many pats gets a curt hiss lol then it’s back to giving her chin rubs until she’s had enough of me. I love her.

    I understand he’s probably a niche part of the internet these days, but it’s too easy for awful things like this to spread due to malicious people. I hope he gets the self he so clearly needs.

    observations on enshitification

    this morning put on new alpaca and sheep wool mix jumper, tried it on in shop, it was warm and comfortable fit and felt soft to touch

    at home wear for 10 minutes, damn it’s itchy even through long sleeve spencer, why is the wool so crappy,

    I wonder if it’s “shoddy” ie reprocessed wool from recycled garments

      Put the jumper in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for 24 hours. This will stop the itching (which comes from short fibres poking through the yarn). Dunno why it works but it does.

      The enshitifcation of the world just gets me down. I have to actively choose to not think about it because it makes me so angry and upset. In fact, I went into a rant and backspaced the whole thing because I’m trying to stay calm.

    I got some shoes recently and I swear the ones I took home are a size too big. I got some dud shoes a while ago which makes me paranoid about getting the wrong shoes and it’s annoying because I swear they fit properly in the store.

    But as annoying as it is, it feels like a plotline from one of those network dramas from the US where they try to normalise the lives of people that make over $250k a year. Things must be going alright if that’s one of the biggest problems in my life.
