Oh wait, the link goes to ok.ru. That’s … a problem in terms of copyright. I’m not ever super strict about that, but still, that site has every movie ever made. Seems suspect to me. Thoughts?
It’s a Russian site (part of VK, the social media giant there) and IIRC Russia specifically passed a law removing copyright from “hostile” nations, i.e. ones that participate in sanctions.
Maybe technically legal in Russia but probably nowhere else.
I don’t ordinarily look for stuff there, but I got so frustrated yesterday trying to find stuff in my wishlist (only 1 in 20 available thru licensed sites) I resorted to it.
But I understand not wanting such links, I won’t post any more OK.ru.
I always thought of this as being a community for “free full movies on a legitimate site that’s not focused on films.”
- movies you have to pay for on youtube aren’t free so they don’t fit here.
- pirate streaming sites aren’t legitimate so they don’t fit here.
- Tubi and netflix etc are focused on films so they don’t fit here.
Places like youtube, dailymotion, vimeo, wikimedia, and archive are legitimate sites. Sometimes movies are posted for free there by the copyright owners, or sometimes the movies are public domain, sometimes the movies’ rights are abandoned, sometimes a rando posts them and the copyright owner claims the monetization but lets them stay up, and sometimes the movie is only up for a while til the copyright owner claims them and gets them taken down. In this community, the fun part is finding these hidden gems and posting them here.
I agree. My thought is I would never want some person or org to go after a Lemmy / piefed admin because we post links to less legit sites.

I hadn’t realized there was a copy on YT.
I notice that’s 9 minutes shorter than the standard. It’s also got “HK theatrical subtitles”*, and the translation quality of those is usually… godawful 😆
*HK law back then (maybe still) said films shown in cinemas had to have subtitles in both Chinese and English. But the law never said they had to be any good!

There’s a little bit of Mr Vampire-style spells with chicken blood stuff, but this actually goes with Western-style vampires, not hopping goengsi.
Sammo Hung’s Encounters of the Spooky Kind really kickstarted the action-horror-comedy genre in HK and is definitely worth checking out.
