    That one kid in the back (5th row) kinda looks like he’s doing a “fake it til ya make it” lol. Even seems like he looks at his buddies answer first

    My mom taught me math on an abacus, if I ever decide to have kids it’s how they’ll be learning as well. It’s just a really good way to physically present math alternative to a purely mental construct. I honestly think schools should only allow an abacus or a slide rule until you hit college.

    I honestly don’t really know how people with purely western educations visualize math in their heads? It does kinda give you a bad habit of flicking imagery beads when you’re doing mental equations, though that kid is especially spazy.

      I don’t agree with disallowing calculators until college, but only because many students take courses in highschool that require the use of graphing calculators and statistical formulas.

      I think that is also connected to level of aphantasia. I don’t have a lot of visualisation in my mind in general.

      I don’t visualise any math equarions at all. I see the equation. And then just calculate it in my head as abstract values, not connected to any visualization. For bigger stuff than 10x10 (I’m honestly grateful my teachers made us learn those by heart), I have to divide it into smaller parts, e.g. 16 x 7 would be 7 x 10 + 7 x 6. Of course at a certain point I’m not able to do that any more. For me its more connected to my inner narrator, I need to “talk” through the equation.

        I wonder if how you were educated influences your ability to visualize things? For me I can almost hear the beads clack into place when I’m doing it in my head.

        Tbf that’s kinda what an abacus does for you. So you might actually do pretty well using one of you ever wanted to learn.

          Probably, but the first steps of teaching math involved very much the use of visualisation, as it was taught with “3 apples and now we have 2 more” or for multiplication “3 rows of 5 apples”. But I’m maybe not a good example. Because I have aphantasia also with reading. I don’t have a picture in my mind while reading a description of a person or a location and others very much have one.

          For this absolutely basic stuff? Yes. Or at least they try. No idea how good it is in general, but for me it worked as intended. I’m not a friend of learning by heart for many things, but these small mental calculations that happen a lot in my line of work, I’m glad to be able to do them without needing some mental process and can just put the answer down quickly and even if I’m stressed.

      I’ve wondered if people who grew up when digital clocks were more common don’t visualize time the way I do. “40 minutes later” is something that I see as an angle on a clock face.

        They do, when I was in school one of the common screening tests to tell if a patient is mentally coherent used to be visualizing time on a clock face. They had to change it about 10 years ago because a lot of people don’t visualize time that way anymore.
