Europe keeps announcing »digital sovereignty« while handing its most valuable data, AI workloads, and cloud infrastructure to American hyperscalers: You don’t achieve independence by subsidizing chip factories while renting your digital future from foreign tech giants! That’s dependence with better PR.
It will always be like that.
While I don’t disagree in general, this makes me wonder how they categorized things:
Europe still designs only about 1 percent of the world’s chips and has no major chip designer of its own.
Which is technically true if you count ARM as Japanese given that it is currently owned by Softbank, but in reality it is a British company and AFAIK is doing most of their designs there as well.
