Workers at the mining giant's operations in Port Hedland have walked off the job in one of the most significant industrial disputes to hit the resources sector in a quarter of a century.

Unionised staff at BHP’s operations in Port Hedland have walked off the job for an eight-hour strike.

Family and supporters of the workers began gathering about half an hour before the strike began.

The ABC understands there has been no disruption to operations at the port, with BHP on track to load seven ships by 10pm tonight.

    The West Australian font page article today was all “they had a strike but it was a complete failure, BHP claims victory”. They claimed that fewer than 50 staff walked off the site. I don’t know how true that is, though.

    Funny world we live in where we can’t trust a supposedly prestigious newspaper to be 100% truthful.
