The state party could have decided that any process that didn’t allow voters to get a say would be fatally compromised. It did not.

its essentially the same thing as appointing the candidate. The state reps will choose how the convention is run and how the candidate is selected. There will inevitably be “superdelegate” party insiders whose vote counts for 10,000 voters, or something like that.
