China is improving but they’re pretty much a couple of decades behind on lgbt rights. There’s a conservative faction in the party that sees lgbt culture as divisive/western decadence and suppresses anything deemed to “promote” it.
There have been recent legal changes giving people more protection though so hopefully things keep improving.
