Eric Migicovsky, leader of the revived Pebble, is making smartwatches for himself. You’re just along for the ride.
“Apple makes it incredibly difficult for third-party devices to interact with things like iMessage or Siri or any of the built-in features on iOS,” Migicovsky told Gizmodo in a freewheeling video interview. “And that sucks. That sucks for competition. That sucks for innovation. That sucks for price.”
I love my time 2 but it has a pretty serious design flaw; the glass screen has an exposed edge. A minor scrape on anything of sufficient hardness will chip the edge and in my case it has.
I can deal with scratches but these chips are so distracting. I’m very sad this flaw was not fixed before production as it’s a simple fix. I wasn’t convinced it would be a problem but I was wrong it chips very easily and now I have to live with it
I hope the next run of watches raises the bezel so it can protect the glass edge.
Just got my Pebble Time 2 a few weeks ago. Loving the battery life!! I’m actually using it with an iphone, but as someone who wanted a smartwatch just for notifications on my wrist, I don’t miss any of the “missing features” at all.
I miss my time round, but I’m wary after the last couple exploded…
The heck?
The original time rounds had a common problem where the pouch battery would swell and pop the watch open.
Also had a Time Steel that once froze and suddenly heated up enough to leave a welt on my wrist.
those were good smart watches. good watches, and good smart watches.
All competition is overpriced crap.
Were? You do know they’re back, right? Due to historic reasons, they are now fully open source (app, firmware included).
Am glad they are back, crazy how one tech company managed to get watches smart, rather than making phones that fit on your wrist and act as shitty watches
I hope it’s like a gshock watch
In what way? I don’t think the Time 2 is super durable like Gshocks, seeing multiple reports of cracked screens because of the way the glass is slightly raised, causing knocks on sides of the glass where it’s more likely to break.
That said, mine has been fine for the week that I’ve had it but I have screen protectors already ordered
waterproof and beefy enough to survive not being babied, I honestly haven’t really looked into smart watches for a long time so they probly exist now but it was something I wanted when they where first coming out but the way they talk about the watch here is about as simple as I think I’d like, honestly just give me something unbreakable with a screen I can put an interesting readout on plus notifications, music control and maybe act as a range extender or middle hop to a bluetooth speaker if I can’t have my phone near by
Well, the all metal casing makes the Pebble Time 2 feel pretty sturdy, and it is waterproof to 5 atm, but yeah, screen design seems to be a flaw, albeit one that people are already making simple bumper covers and such to fix.
For all those other points, yeah, Pebbles have been great for being able to actually read the screen all the time, get filtered notifications, and the buttons make music control way easier than any touch screen smart watch I’ve used. Pretty sure it isn’t capable of being a Bluetooth range extender though.
I love my gshock! The one I have (5610) is thin, light, solar powered, adjusts to atomic time, and will go through hell and back. The new ones with MIP displays seem awesome but I can’t justify it yet
