One of the things I see a lot from Western sources is how China is the number one source for dragnet fishing vessels. I was wondering if anyone around here had any actual facts behind this? I would imagine China needing to feed so many people and one of the places that would be hit hardest by the destruction of the ocean would have regulations.
Idk if that is true, but it’s wouldn’t be that surprising since they have over a billion people. The real question for these kinds of things is how many do they have per capita.
And if they do have alot per capita, that’s a shame, they should work on reducing that.
So this was a massive problem… a decade ago.
To directly answer your question, around 9k, which like all fishing vessels from China, is around half of what it was a decade ago..
Neither the US or EU keep specific registrations in publicly accessible data, apparently, but the limited data I could find have similar vessels at around 3-5k for US and European trawlers.
So China isn’t that far off total number, and much more responsible per capita at this point.
Chinese fishing vessels are large vessels filled with many Chinese and fish
This is something where the only data is either unreliable official statistics (fishing boats lie) or NGOs tied to imperialist funding.
