A lot of us go vegan for ethical reasons. It’s great to experience health benefits too!
In my case, I lost a lot of weight. I feel much better mentally and recover faster from exercise.
I had chronic GERD (heartburn/indigestion) that was really bothersome.
It went away pretty much immediately upon going vegan. It was definitely the dairy because I was vegetarian before.
I also do a lot of physical activity that’s hard on my body, and find recovery has gotten better.
It’s important to pay attention to the negative effects, too.
A vegan friend’s gums receded to the point she needed a gum graft.
The problem wasn’t being vegan, of course! The problem was she didn’t pay close enough attention to nutrition. She had to learn more about plant-based substitutes for things she used to get from animal products.
Still a happy vegan a few years later 👍
Just curious, do you know what she was missing nutritionally?
Didn’t really. I did lose a lot of weight before going vegan, though. So maybe it helped me hold my weight for a few years
I didn’t lose weight, but my arthritis has gotten significantly better. I am still struggling to find good alternatives to dairy products — and avoiding anything advertised as “vegan” has helped control costs — but it has been worth the effort.
I have used soy, almond, and coconut milk to make tea or coffee. I haven’t really found a good alternative to cheese. Most of the vegan cheese and butter alternatives tend to be processed. I think I just have to live without them. 🥲
Giving up cheese is/was hard. Especially things like queso. The only thing that helped this craving for me, was oddly, humus. I make Hummus Wraps with cucumbers and other veggies. This was the only thing the somewhat satisfied cheese craving for me.
Nothing noticeable with my physique, but it did help me with my mental health. Having actions and morals aligned gives a sort of mental peace I’ve never experienced before

Same here. It also makes you more aware and sensitive to animal suffering. So it can be a double edged sword.
