Playing Mystic Quest and… it’s not bad?
Trying to finish it for the #12in12 challenge (finish at least a game per month), and though I’d read people complaining #MysticQuest is a bad #FinalFantasy, I’m positively surprised.
Probably being past 60~70% of the game, other than the shallow story, it’s being a fun experience. Hard enough I need to pay attention, but simple enough it doesn’t get taxing. Dungeons can be a tad long and winding, but not like FFII’s dungeons (I like that game too, but oh god, those dungeons 😩). Regarding the story, a neutral point, but it’s simple enough I don’t need to pay much attention at least. Magic is pretty useful for once in a RPG, even later on. And I’ve yet to grow tired of the OST (Alexa, play “Battle Theme” on repeat).
Also the Japanese version has simple enough texts it’s simple to interpret. But how does “Rock”, “ロック”, becomes “Tristam”? Came across the English name and it got me confused. "<.<
Anyways, dunno if it’s still officially distributed anywhere, so if not, I think it’s worth hunting down cartridge to play! =D
It definitely doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets. But the difficulty goes all over the place depending on whether or not the area you’re in has enemies that can cast petrify. Going from being on mental autopilot to suddenly getting a one round game over because the enemies you were fighting all decided to cast stone is one of the many examples of poor polish the game has.
And maybe that’s its biggest downfall: lack of polish.
I will absolutely die on the hill that it has some of the best music on the SNES though.
It got a bad rap because it wasn’t considered a “real” Final Fantasy. It was made to try to appeal to people who weren’t already fans of turn-based role-playing games.
It’s almost quaint to think about. After all, if anything Final Fantasy has gone further in the direction of Mystic Quest and away from its roots as a turn-based RPG.

I don’t understand this statement. Mystic Quest is extremely turn-based.
Mystic Quest has a single main character with guests rather than a party, enemies on screen, and Zelda-esque items to traverse the environment. All three of these are more and more common in FF.
Considering it came out in the same general timeframe of 4-6, it’s understandable why it’s been panned. Really, without the FF name attached it’d definitely be forgettable.
I read Mythic Quest at first and was surprised to hear they made a game from it.
