Cheesecake for mine
We don’t really have one tbh.
We do have a few popular ones, but there’s no one big traditional dessert for us that carries along
That being said, there are two that are damn near like that. Both super simple, so even the kids can manage to make them, which means they get passed along even to non cooks.
Dirt cake and eclair cake. Neither of which is a cake.
Dirt cake is layered, crushed oreos, with the other layers being mixed vanilla pudding and either whipped cream or cool whip. That’s it.
Eclair cake is also just layers of stuff. Graham crackers and a very similar filling (same ingredients, different proportions). It’s then topped with chocolate icing, or ganache (depending on who makes it, but store bought icing is the default).
Both of them are way yummier than they should be based on what goes into them, and they’re also both cheap-ish and fast to put together, on top of being easy enough even kindergartners can at least help (as opposed to “helping”).
Now, both of my grandmothers were accomplished home cooks and bakers. Each had their “signature” cakes, pies, and non cake/pie desserts. Plus, each had their single signature dessert.
My paternal grandmother made cobblers that were crazy good. Yeah, all cobblers are good, but there was always something extra good about hers that left other cobblers ashamed. Part of it was her crusts, but even her pour-over cobblers were amazing.
On the maternal side, it was red velvet cake that really stood out. Super moist cake from scratch, plus the icing that was whipped to an ideal state. She could do any cake with similar skill and outcomes, but the red velvet was essentially her favorite cake, so she had nailed her recipe to the extent that it was perfect every single time before I was even born.
Depends a lot on the time of year, but Christmas is cookie season with buckeyes (peanut butter balls dipped incompletely in chocolate) and marzipan strawberries (marzipan and strawberry jello shaped into strawberries, rolled in red sugar, and decorated with plastic stems). Summer is a pie that involves a cream made of cool whip, sweetened condensed milk, and lemon juice covered in sour cherries in a sauce made from the liquid from the can they come in.
Cinnamon and sugar over toasted and buttered bread. Lately I’ve been using carb smart tortillas for the 60% DV of fiber.
This just took me back to my childhood. Hadn’t had this in forever. We used to get a small thing of ground cinnamon in our stocking so we can make this.
