NASA could start by building a modern rocket, not a hacky assortment of spare parts left over from the Shuttle program and designed in the 1970s. But it’s not about going to the moon, it’s about giving the military industrial complex more money.

Nobody even knows how to build the RS-25 engines anymore. There’s a handful not at the bottom of the ocean and they’re somehow supposed to take whitey to the moon.

So the US will lose the “race” it unilaterally declared. Just like the last time.

2029 is the 80th anniversary of the revolution. I believe they plan to have footprints on the moon to celebrate. Word is, one of the taikonauts will be a woman, so they can lay claim to landing the first woman on the moon.

Instead of trying to launch everything on one big heavy (the ones SpaceX keep blowing up), the Chinese are launching legos on existing rockets that can be snapped together in space and a lunar module that can dock with their space station. They are already setting up a GPS lunar satellite system, instead of using star charts.

For those who don’t know, China plans to send people to the moon this decade, while in 10 years or less they plan to already have a base on the moon with somewhat permanent occupation. They might even get to mars by this time too. As someone who likes space exploration, and was even playing some Kerbal Space Program just now, knowing that I can see that I don’t need to pay attention to any yankee plans as China’s are solid and interesting long term…

Nasa states in the article that their goal for a moon landing is still 2028, while the chinese goal is just “by 2030”, so there’s still a bit of wiggle room for both. I wouldn’t get my hopes up yet. Still am pretty sure that NASA will fuck up somehow though

I can’t see how NASA can do such a big overhaul in under two years. Meanwhile, China has been pretty much on track with their program. I mean there’s a chance NASA pulls it off, but I also fully expect they’ll fuck it up. Worst case scenario for NASA is that they rush it under political pressure and then end up with another Challenger style disaster. That seems like the most likely possibility if they do push for 2028 deadline.
