The Trump administration responded by stating that the US regularly meets with civil society groups as part of routine engagement
Well, yeah. That’s a big part of how the US does regime change. Regime change operations pretty much are routine for them.
I mean, that’s the conspiracy theory, anyway. There’s been a striking lack of new US-friendly dictatorships in the last few decades.
@AGM@lemmy.ca
Not just the US, but Russia, China - imperial powers that effect regime changes - have improved their game in the last 2-3 decades (per your timeline). They’ve evolved from publicly endorsing a group, which carries the ‘costs’ of have to appear to support them in some response. Now, they’re more underground, they sew disinformation, they hire paid protesters, etc. - what they’re doing is out of the public’s eyes and thus costs them a lot less. Privately meeting with civil society groups is this new version imoThe thing is, that’s unfalsifiable. An unfalsifiable idea about a small, shadowy group of people secretly being behind world events.
A far simpler explanation is that great powers try and exert influence, in actually very poorly hidden ways, but that it rarely works to the degree of countries being puppeted. Instead, middle and small powers spend a lot of time negotiating with and playing great powers off of each other.
Why do I feel like this is bigger news OUTSIDE of Canada than it actually is IN Canada. like on Canadian news I hear jack shit about this but all these American “journalists” and posters keep posting this crap when the majority of people IN Alberta are all “nah, we’re good”.
I hear you saying the idea that Marlaina Smith and her ilk are hell-bent on destroying Alberta and Canada is not actually news, and I agree.
No, the majority of Albertans think separation is dumb as fuck.
The people doing the petitions got busted using AI to juice their line-ups. One had a huge lineup that went right past the door of the building to sign.
It’s a loud minority being backed by foreign interests
BC and Ontario should annex the southern part of Alberta and institute a no fly zone. Isolate them from the rest of the world until they fall in line.
Edit: /s because apparently that’s not obvious enough. Although I don’t blame you guys. We live in stupid times.
The funny thing is, if Alberta were to separate, it would likely mean the same thing for them as Quebec.
Namely, you get the part of your province you joined confederation with, not all the northern crown land that was added to your province afterwards.
If Quebec separates, they lose everything from Val d’Or and north.
Alberta would likely lose Fort MacMurry and possibly Edmonton… I need to go dig for that original map of their pre-confederation territory.
EDIT: Its hard to find a good one, but this is the area they had before the new province was created as part of confederation.

That image is the district of Alberta. Alberta joined confederation looking like it does now by combining woth the district of Athabaska.
1905 – The provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan are created out of the districts of Athabaska, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Assiniboia; the District of Keewatin is transferred to the newly defined Northwest Territories
True, same is true for Quebec if you check the 1905 map, however what they would get upon separation would be somewhat similar to the yellow portion here, though I think some of the northern part of that yellow portion they lose as well.

My point being, there’s a strong likelyhood they would not walk away with the whole province.
Most Albertans don’t actually want this, this is a smoke show meant to drum up support, more likely they fake the results to show over 50% and Donald will claim its real even if we prove them wrong. He’ll use that as an excuse to take over Alberta. He’ll just do what Putin did.
They aren’t taking over shit. America is heading towards a great depression by the end of the year, they are going to be too broke to invade anybody. More likely you will have states seceding from the union to join Canada.
I mean, wasn’t the former governor of Minnesota saying that they should secede and join Canada?
https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/minnesota-join-canada-jesse-ventura-9.7067000
Yep!
Wish we could but it’s not practical to have them join. I do wish north us would split from the south, the lead brains can have all the fun they want down their.
Nice to think about though.
Lol that’d be funny but I also think your right but for another reason, I think they get tied up into a civil war before they get the chance, then the depression hits the richoids. Only then they won’t be able to do shiz
I don’t really see who could fake it, though. Most evidence is Danielle Smith is doing the David Cameron thing, and doesn’t actually want to leave.
It’s inevitable “rigged election” type stuff comes out of this, but there’s limited paths to politically making anything out of that. (Of course, Trump can invade any time he wants for any reason)
Then fucking do something about it and get the UCP tf out. I’m sick of hearing “not all Albertans”. Recall these fucking traitors
It’s really really hard to recall someone under Alberta rules. You basically have to run your own full election to gather enough signatures.
Multiple efforts are ongoing anyway.
I mean I would if I could but I don’t have that power.
Ah yes, internet commenters saying we must go nuclear based on a clickbait headline.
wow, i think that would be insane.
