Purely asking this for some fiction writing
Balkanised has become slang for “region formerly in a federation or union that has split into many small independent nations after the fall of said Union. Like happened in the Balkan region with the fall of USSR”
500 years of general public and economic decline where access to information is greatly reduced and local governments slowly replace the influence of the national government. Over time they organize locally for protection as outsiders begin to pillage whatever value remains. It’ll look a lot like what happened to the Roman Empire.
“…Like happened in the Balkan region with the fall of USSR.”
I’m unfamiliar with the history of Eastern Europe. Did the fall of the Soviet Union cause Yugoslavia to collapse into war?
The fall of the USSR was certainly a factor, but like most things the cause was multifaceted. Tito, the long term dictator of Yugoslavia died in 1980, and his replacements weren’t quite as skilled at stemming the rise of nationalist factions. On top of that, constitutional changes in the 70’s weakened federal power which fueled the growth of local nationalist factions. I’d say the final straw came from the man who came to power not long after Tito, Milošević. He was an ethnic Serb who moved to give Serbia more and more power in the nation over the other ethnic factions. This ultimately led to Slovenia and Croatia declaring independence and kicking off the conflict
No, was more of a slow and gradual “we’re leaving or else!” for member states in their case, except for a few which had a bit of a cold war, partially cause USSR had spread itself too thin and knew it couldn’t hold them if a hot war broke out.
the total collapse of the education system and the media (including hollywood films). basically the nation has to collapse and then what you’re left with is a bunch of stragglers who have no interest in helping each other.
Well, first the federal government would need to send foot soldiers into the country to attack the people. Then individual state governors would have to active their own police and nation guard troops to defend itself. Then other states would have to have bounty laws that allowed residents to hunt other residents. Then irregulars would have to start attacking across state lines. Then states with ideologically aligned governors would have to pool their resources and setup a border patrol to stop all of these forces from terrorizing they people.
That would be the firm beginning of balkanization
