    Nonsense. You could just snip out some pictures from a magazine and glue them together.

    Or make the picture of a raccoon in a funny hat yourself.

    50 years ago? More like 20.

    I didn’t get dial-up Internet until 1999, and it was still a good few years after that before the global funny pictures economy really picked up.

    Google images was launched in 2001 but didn’t index that many images. Around that time, if you saw a funny picture you’d save it to your hard drive, because if you didn’t then you’d possibly never see it again even if you wanted to.

    It took another few years still for the number of indexed images on search to really ramp up.

    I’d say 2005 was about the point where you could easily find a picture of a raccoon in a funny hat reliably and on-demand.

      Yeah, but 30 years ago houses were stock full of magazines with large photos. I still have quite a lot of those.

      And I was chronically online at points in my life and was in 2002 at least, and I’m pretty sure I may have seen raccoons in hats. But definitely well developed open forums by that point, so you could just ask an artistic person to draw one.

      Paint Shop Pro came out in 1990, so you could do basic editing, however you had to find the Raccoon. Perhaps copy it from your Encarta CD, after you waited until 1993!

    “Drive to a library” - After all those decades reading about US stuff, it still baffles me how many things we take here for granted in Europe. I don’t bat an eye when people measure distances in hours, I’m completely aware of the vast distances and the reliance on cars, and I still get surprised whenever I read about another mundane thing that’s not just easily accessible by walking (or taking short range public transport) in the states.

      Right? I have two libraries that are about 20 mins walk from me. The next two nearest are about 20-30 mins by bike or less by bus. I’m so glad I don’t live in the US (for multiple, multiple reasons).

          Don’t worry, the UK is heading down the same route with our own mini maga simp, the full blown traitor farridge who has already asked trump to punish the uk.

          But we at least have a few more years of state provided health care until farridge sells it off to the USA.

          If you can prove the nazis took the german citizenship from one of your ancestors, you can get it back.
          Otherwise try being a doctor or something.

          If you have any EU citizenship you can live in the Netherlands and enjoy the bike infrastructure.

      I lived on a relatively small island in the usa growing up. The library there was within biking distance but as a kid I’d have loathed walking that far. If we went as a family it was always driven.

      Currently library is within walking distance! If I want to die to the stroad :<

    now I’m saturated on the front of funny raccoon pictures, they’ve become meaningless. It sounds like a lot of fun to have everything at your disposal all the time, but it renders everything meaningless. Of course, this is an exaggeration, there are good things too, I like having all or most paintings available when I look up a painter for instance. But it is true that things being harder to find, makes them more special when you do. Reminds me of this Stewart Lee bit where he talks about how he spoke to his grandparents about the trouble they had to go through when they wanted a sex-mask. Where as now you just order them on amazon, you should ask your grand parents how they managed their kinks back in the day.
