It shows that there are 12 posts, but I’m unable to see them. It’s a local community that I moderate. I tried to make a post. There were no errors. I’m even able to access the post here but it’s not visible in the community. The post doesn’t show up on my profile either. But there are some posts visible if I look at them from another instance e.g. through lemmy.world. The linked posts still doesn’t show up, but could be due to delay in federation.

Edit: Just checked, this post doesn’t show up on my profile either. But if I make a comment on another instance, it does show up on my profile. Weird.

UPDATE: It was happening due to a very stupid reason. I had unchecked “show read posts” in my settings. I do think that this isn’t intended, since it should only affect the homepage/feed/whatever it’s called here and not the profile pages and communities.

You’re right, I don’t see it in your profile either!

I’m using Memmy and Wefwef and right now what they’re fetching is completely out of sync. I’ve seen posts only 10 or 15 down on /all that are 3 years old with no comments. I figure it’s all growing pains and the dust will settle over time. 🤷‍♀️

This seems like a Federation problem. For context, here’s how posts on your community get there from other instances:

    1. External user browses to your local community
    2. The external user creates a post, which gets saved to their external instance first (this version is the “true” post, even though it’s on a different instance)
    3. The external instance sends a copy of the post to your community

So, it’s not hard to explain what’s going on here. People are creating posts in your community (Steps 1 & 2), but for some reason the SDF instance isn’t receiving the post and saving a local copy (Step 3). People on the instance where the post was created can see it, but there’s no copy on the original community.

I’ve been having similar issues on my own communities starting sometime yesterday back when the instance slowed to a crawl. Note how the SDF-hosted community here has no posts in it, even though you can see that posts were created externally from lemmy.world here. Just like in your case, externally created posts have failed to federate back into SDF.

This seems to be affecting comments and PMs as well, which you can see by comparing SDF’s copy of this thread with the one hosted on lemmy.ml here. Based on the timstamps, the connection seems to have broken down around 12 hours ago.

Hey @SDF@lemmy.sdf.org, is there anything that can be done about this or is it maybe something related to the traffic spike that we have to wait out?

EDIT: For the aforementioned post, I was able to fetch two missing comments using the “searchbar trick”, but bizarrely not all of them. This one & this one were able to be retrieved. This one and this one are the two that continue to refuse to fetch. Both of the ones that refuse to fetch are on the lemmy.world instance – apparently we started blocking lemmy.world recently??

It doesn’t explain on thing though. I’m a local in this instance. Even my posts aren’t showing up.

SDF temporarily defederated from lemmy.world because of hardware limitations. For more information, please take a look at this post.
