She’s a TERF/transphobe who uses her wealth to make life shitty for trans people.

She’s advocated for shit like people to go into bathrooms and take photos of trans women using them.

        To clarify for ELI5:

TERF means trans-exclusive radical feminist. They don’t accept that trans women are women and pass laws making their lives worse. Recently notable examples are legal pressure for women to use bathrooms based on gender assigned at birth.

There are a couple reasons (that I know of) why JKR is considered bad by many left wing and liberal people. One is that she is a “trans exclusive radical feminist” or TERF. These are people that are feminist but anti trans, not liked by people pro trans rights. Second is that in Harry Potter there are many instances of racist tropes and/or ‘casual’ or ‘unintended’ racism. Her depiction of goblins has a lot of characteristics from antisemitic stereotypes, greedy, big nose, etc. There are very few POC in the Harry Potter story, and sometimes their implementation seems problematic, i.e. the seemingly only asian character being named Cho Chang. This meme in particular regards the seeming disconnect between the quote cited and her anti trans stance.

Like how the Wizarding World left her behind. I’m playing Hogwarts Legacy (set 100 years before Philosopher’s Stone) and every time I see or hear about a gay couple or a trans character, I imagine JKR hates it and hates us enjoying the best of her world without her bigotry. Ironically her reaction to the game is probably similar to how the alt right reacted to her books when they were new.

I also like how one of your first friends is a Slytherin and the Slytherins aren’t all one dimensional fascist bastards like they were in the books and movies. They’re just a little more ambitious than the rest, like how my Ravenclaw witch is just a little more curious.

I doubt she hates the gay people, tbh. Her whole trans hatred feela very rooted in self hate and it’s kinda sad how she chose the path of being an insufferable piece of shit. There was an interview where she said she should’ve been born a boy. She probably hates being a woman and instead of realizing that that’s how transwomen feel about being amab, she thinks it means no one can possibly want to be a woman unless they want to creep on women or whatever the terf narrative is.

Yeah, she’s like the richest private citizen or the richest private female citizen in the United Kingdom. No amount of hate is going to change that. She’s getting paid from the interest. If we could take her money because we don’t like her, we wouldn’t, because it would be used on us instead. Let her have her money, it won’t ever buy back all the goodwill she’s pissed away.

And I don’t know how popular she is these days… the people she’s sucking up to are the same people who wanted her books banned 20 years ago. What even is her angle, anyway? She taught a generation of kids to stand up for themselves and each other and to explore their potential while being attacked by the alt right, but now that she’s made her money, she’s joining them? It doesn’t make any sense. The left doesn’t like her because she’s anti-trans and the right doesn’t like her because she made Harry Potter.

I don’t think so, the devs made sure to make the game inclusive in many ways that she disagrees with. But I do think no one should buy the game as it gives her money, it’s like buying from a brand owned by nestle. All she sees is money to give to people who support her disgusting and pathetic views and it doesn’t matter if whatever thing that’s based on her creation tries to go against those views. And it doesn’t matter if that thing directly pays her, it will help continue the popularity of that thing so she ends up with more money anyway.

She thinks a lot of things I disagree with. I don’t put much stock in what she thinks. If you do, that’s your business, but it’s got nothing to do with me.

They used to say if you read Harry Potter you worshiped the devil. As an Atheist, I never put much stock in that. I, of course, did not worship the devil at any point, before or after reading the books and/or movies. Playing a game with LGBTQ+ characters and having people assume I share the view of bigots, and I’ve been a lifelong ally, makes even less sense to me.

Also, the game’s been given away and sold for deep discounts (something like 90% off). It’s assumed it’s to get people playing so they pay attention to a sequel announcement.

What she thinks, not the problem. What she spends her Hogwarts licencing dollars is. She literally bankrolled the lawyers that got Gender Recognition Certificates made useless by enforcing a definition of woman that excludes trans women in the UK Supreme court. She did this to the tune of about seven hundred thousand pounds sterling personally out of pocket.

She spends her dosh on fighting to literally change laws that attack trans people’s ability to exist in public and funds the defense of bigots who got fired or reprimanded at their workplaces for harassment of trans coworkers.

This stopped being about her being a troll about four years ago. The reason people say not to buy her shit these days is because of what she’s doing with the money.

I wasn’t casting shade on you, just repeating what Jo has said publicly, that she views Harry Potter merchandise sales as a tacit endorsement of her views. It’s always worth considering the views of the creator when consuming media, informed consumer and all that. But yes I’ve gotten the game free myself and also pirated it.

That’s fair. I also have a Hermione (I forget which year) Pop figure because I always liked the character.

I think it’s funny that J.K. Rowling considers Hermione to be the self-insert character. She’s a bit more like Draco or the Slytherin house and their leanings toward purebloods, with regards to her opinions on trans women.

I never liked how she did the Houses. Gryffindor good, Slytherin evil, and the other two don’t matter. I never got that. How I would have done it, Harry would still be Gryffindor, Ron would be Hufflepuff, Hermione Ravenclaw, and Draco Slytherin, but they’d all be friends, with different goals, and would have to work together in various pairings/trios/all four of them to solve problems relating to each of the four Houses. She set up a good system but then sold it short. My character is basically a more ambitious Hermione, so she’s a Ravenclaw. She’s a bit naive at first, but her thirst for power makes her almost seem Slytherin, and she uses dark magic. But only on evil. Like all information is good to know, it’s the application of it that determines the ethics and morality.

I don’t much mind shade, I get plenty of it at work. I make some of my own shade, but I also make light, by the same token or analogy. Even if you were casting shade, that would be your choice. It’s my choice whether I dwell in it or “shine”. It’s not a great example. We all throw a little shade at things we don’t like and it’s hard to avoid it sometimes. I just try to have fun, even if some of the people involved in that fun aren’t such good people, if that makes any sense. The TL;DR is, “you’re good.”
