The Vancouver Society in Support of Democratic Movement signed an open letter and to stand with members of the Canadian Coalition on Human Rights in China.

“We wish to express our deep concern regarding Prime Minister Carney’s forthcoming visit to China,” a statement reads

At a time of escalating human rights abuses and transnational repression, we believe it is imperative that Canada’s highest political leadership place human rights at the forefront of all high-level engagement with the Chinese government.

Canadian PM Mark Carney is on a state visit in China. Back in April, Mr. Carney said China is the largest threats with respect to foreign interference in Canada and is an emerging threat in the Arctic.

This kind of thing is only effective if it’s universal and I would support it on those grounds. But if we’re going to pick and choose who we decide to lecture on human rights records based on politics, it’s a pointless exercise. Like standing on a dead horse and calling it the moral high ground.

Our government condemning China while supplying support to Israel is just hypocritical, and would hurt our credibility.

What an absurdly weird whataboutism. As if one crime would justify another.

It expose your hypocrisy that’s not whataboutism. You can’t selectively support human rights for certain countries and not for others. If the article was about Canada need to be careful with deepeing economic ties with all countries involved in human right abuses nobody would have a problem with it

It’s not a whataboutism, it’s hypocrisy. At no point do I justify the actions of China or Israel, just stating the fact that harping at one while ignoring the other is hypocrisy.

Call it whatever you want, but these kinds of comments always work in one direction: defending China, or at least distracting from the Chinese government’s crimes by just shouting out “Gaza” or “Israel” or “UAE” or anything that.

It never goes the other way, though. There are many posts here calling out Israel and the US, for example, but there you don’t see such comments saying, "But China’s genocide … "

What you are doing is widespread here in the Lemmyverse. It’s some sort of “the West bad, China bad okay” stance. I call this whataboutism. It shows your hypocrisy.
