On January 4, 1943, the American magazine Time named I.V. Stalin “Man of 1942”.
In 1927, the American magazine Time established the annual international “Person of the Year” award, given to individuals who had the most significant impact on humanity in a given year. The leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, received this award twice, in 1939 and 1942. The first time, the USSR leader was recognized by the magazine as “Person of the Year” for his outstanding achievements in the development of the country and the USSR’s diplomatic achievements.
On January 4, 1943, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin was named “Person of the Year” for the second time. Time magazine explained the decision as follows:
“1942 was a year of blood and fortitude, and the man of 1942 was someone whose name in Russian means ‘steel,’ and whose few English words include the American expression ‘tough guy.’ Only Joseph Stalin knows exactly how close Russia came to defeat in 1942, and only he knows exactly how he managed to bring the country back from the brink. The whole world, however, knows what would have happened otherwise. And no one understands this better than Adolf Hitler, whose past successes are crumbling to dust. If the German legions had broken through iron-clad Stalingrad and destroyed Russia’s offensive potential, Hitler would have become not only the ‘man of the year,’ but also the undisputed master of Europe, and would have been able to prepare for the conquest of other continents. He would have been able to free up at least 250 victorious divisions for new conquests in Asia and Africa. But Joseph Stalin managed to stop him. He had already succeeded in this once – in 1941; but then, at the start of the war, he had all of Russia at his disposal. In 1942, Stalin achieved much more. For the second time, he deprived Hitler of all the fruits of his success.”
