and has been the single most destructive force to the fabric of Canada in modern history. He’s cutting deeper than any conservative could ever hope to, as is he privatizing and outsourcing profits.

Lol no. Have you actually been following the policy, and what the Conservatives are suggesting instead?

He’s definitely moved things to the center (it was a change election, PP would have won otherwise), but on the US file he’s doing about as well as anyone could hope for, and hasn’t actually cut much - literally just civil servants. All the social programs are fine. Meanwhile PP’s life’s mission is to kill the CBC.

Most of the carbon tax is still there. There’s a new housing program. He just tricked Alberta into raising it’s carbon tax. And it goes on.

We’re not going to, the US has our economic balls in a vice.

There’s more chance of a court ruling it unlawful, but that takes time.

Literally, it’s just public servants. Read the damn budget - or a summary of the damn budget - if you actually care about the truth.

I could point out the gaps in the plan there are, to prove I’m not shilling, but I’m guessing you’d just see that grace as weakness. I have better things to do than that kind of exchange.

That would be the hard part about working in anything geopolitically relevant. Your government will have to do realpolitik, and you can’t reasonably impose your own preferences over top of that and stay relevant, so you end up welding together anti-protester bumpers for the Saudis, or brown guy cages for the Americans. Hopefully all the sales to Ukraine make up for it.

I have no indication that anyone left of Pierre Poilievre thinks what the Americans are doing right now is cool. Even PP might not actually, given his own record on immigration, although he’s glad to pander to the worst.

But less people means less services

Yeah, since you’re not being a dick, I have to agree. Nobody remotely objective says the federal government seems overstaffed, kinda the opposite, and Carney seems to really believe in AI as magic pixie dust. They’re probably going to have to scale back their plans once rubber hits the road, and we’ll either get a bigger deficit or new taxes.

What they didn’t cut was everything else. My teeth are still covered, for example. That would not be true of a Conservative budget, which would also cut back things that have been around for decades rather than years, like the CBC.

When I said you were speaking like a liberal it was in response to “tricking” Alberta into increasing the carbon tax. The only time I’ve seen the lead buried that deeply is in LPC press material and from its surrogates. Because…

Hey, some of what you’re saying sounds like an NDP or Green press release. And I’m pretty sure “everyone won” is the current Liberal line, not “we suckered somebody”.

Sure, oil companies win on certain things. They also have to pay a higher carbon tax, which is a big win for the climate. We’ll see if anything comes from Pathways, which would mostly be a win for the climate. Danielle Smith just loses.

Describing Carney as moving Canada toward the centre is absurd, considering what he’s actually doing.

Trudeau was the first or second most left-wing PM ever. What’s to the right of the left?

All of Trudeaus trade-offs and pet projects are gone

The water treatment project is still underway if delayed again; the tree planting will stop at the original billion but it’s not gone. The carbon tax is only gone for consumers. And, like mentioned, dental/pharma care are still around, although that was an NDP policy.

It shouldn’t. The context was that it was implied to be more than just that.

You can play semantics bud but your posts paint a clear picture

If everyone else doesn’t know what they’re talking about, maybe you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Justin, of course, was a culture war liberal with his gender equal cabinet etc

    So on the left.

I think I’ll just leave it there.

OP said he’s cut everything. No, no he did not. He cut public servant jobs. All kinds of programs were untouched, including the new NDP-sponsored ones.

Which, you’ll notice, says nothing either way about whether that’s desirable.

and eventually had his government prematurely removed because he wouldn’t.

Not to be a jerk about it, but you sound like you’re living in a different Canada from me. He was removed because he had become massively unpopular with voters and the Liberal caucus didn’t want PP.

I don’t personally know Trudeau, but my perception was that he wanted a majority from the snap election, not that he hated dental care.

Carney is not passionate about the environment.

He worked at government and NGO climate-related posts after his time central banking. Reporters that actually talk to him off-camera say he’s passionate about the climate.

He literally passed a bill that allows the private sector to ignore environmental regulation so they could build a pipeline,

Conditional on something that will never, ever happen. Danielle Smith thinks she can get BC and coastal First Nations signing up, but she thinks a lot of weird things.

and he cancelled most of Trudeau’s environmental policy.

My impression is that it’s mostly still standing. The really publicised and understandable planks like the consumer carbon tax were retreated from, but most of what can’t be turned into a slogan, stayed. That being said, I couldn’t name every Trudeau environmental policy off the top of my head.

and forced the NDP into oblivion because they abandoned their voters and tried to occupy the old Liberal space.

Again, that sounds like a different country with different polls. The NDP hasn’t suffered for being too far right in my time, and if they hypothetically were to, the Green party is right there. They actually lost a lot of seats to the Conservatives last election.

I’m not sure Pierre ever was as deep in the centre as Carney is now, and I doubt it, but in any case the reason he’s gone way to the right is because that’s the global Conservative zeitgeist, and his base demands it. He paid for it at election time.

Yes. Trudeau was tickling up against the NDP there, and probably had little problem passing their policies. Carney is a different beast. He’s passionate about the environment and wants the government in on homebuilding, but he’s also a techbro and seems to want trickledown-type policies regarding the rich.

The thing is, PP is so far off to the right there’s still a ton of headroom in between.

I was there for Harper; remember the barbaric cultural practices hotline? Remember the fisheries library just being tossed? The only contender for further left is Lester Pearson (by the standards of his time), who brought in the healthcare system. I’m not even being original here, it’s pretty standardly what you’d hear from a pundit.

I’m arguing that the Liberals acting like conservatives makes the conservatives tack even further to the right, and we slide and slide into late stage capitalist hell.

Just looking around the world, I’m certain the right is pulling, not being pushed.
