This is all obvious to literally everyone except the people at the top who make the final decision. In many companies, the top has very little fucking clue what the people who work for them actually do day-to-day.
There’s a name for that phenomenon where executives have no experience with the actual product the company produces. Experience decay? Experience gap? This is gonna bug me until I find it
Two phenomena: The Perception Gap and the Leadership Gap
Perception Gap: A leadership team who’s understanding of an organizations inner workings does not match that same understanding within the organization itself. (i.e. Amazon bathroom breaks)
Leadership Gap: The basic skills required to run the business are completely absent from leadership members, or who’s scope of duty is misunderstood by leadership, adding unreasonable expectations. (i.e. EA project heads not knowing how dev environments are… developed)
Thank you, this would have bothered me for days.
There’s also “institutional knowledge” where you fire everyone with experience who knows how the company works/runs. The remaining company then repeats past mistakes and spends huge amounts of money reinventing the wheel.

No manager knows what the devs really do, it irks most of them and they always try to fake that they do (but they don’t. Stop it it’s always awkward.).
All the indie companies are poised to eat the rich companies. With the Great Second Depression nearing, nobody is going to be paying for overpriced corporate garbage. They may not even be able to pay for the odd $10 indie gem. But those will be the only games selling any numbers at all.
Yeah video games are just about done. Was a fun hobby and art form once. In retrospect it’s kind of amazing the good stuff that did get made, considering the market forces and miseducated audience they were being made for.
Perhaps AI slop was just baked into our economy since before anyone knew we could outsource creative work to llms
The days of the AAA studio might be limited but some of my favorite recent releases have come from small studios or indie developers.
How do I already have 50 hours in Megabonk? Talking to friends and family about a Necesse server soon too for its 1.0 drop as it was a lot of fun when i played it a year or so ago. We are almost done with our Abiotic Factor server that we need to clear first. Survival Half Life with SCP Foundation-like elements is a fun premise and we’re enjoying the run.
I’m waiting for Motemancer to get a little more content and then I’ll probably start a solo run there as well with its early similarities to Factorio. Schedule I was also fun from my initial toe dip, and I’m looking forward to a little more content before I play with some friends.
There are a lot of options, I think the hurdle people need to get over is life-like graphics does not equal a good game, and can often get in the way of, or completely sideline, elements that are fun and can make or break a game.
Yeah, you’re right. I’ve even seen some indie devs use ai assets to just punch above their weight a little. I think when I hear about Black Isle I just immediately tend to start doomer posting, but there is still a lot of quality low-key art being made.
Thanks for pointing that out
I feel you brother. I know it’s hard to find the bright side sometimes, especially when there’s so much bad news flowing.
Wanderer, I shall believe you . . . for now. You may enter Shady Sands
