Be happy when you’re miserable. Wear a whacky tie while you waste your life making other people rich. Treat yourself to a nice coffee before you slave away the day to pay $2000 a month for a closet apartment.

You see, it’s all about little slices of joy on the shit sandwich that is American professionalism.

You have more energy to fight the system if you find ways to take care of yourself and enjoy your existence while surviving.

There’s a fine line between recognizing the injustice you’re subjected to, and ruminating in that suffering such that you can’t ever participate in making it better, or lets you keep going on instead of just deciding you’re not cut out for being alive.

As snarky as I was being, I agree with you. No one can make you feel the way you do, but you. Thich Nhat Hahn, a Buddhist monk, has a book called “Being Peace” which addresses choosing to smile at pain. He says, “There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way.” That book changed my life.

That’s lovely ❤️ maybe I’ll have to see if my library has a digital copy available

Though in fairness it is also valid to vent, sometimes that’s an important part of coping with the pain of the world we live in. It just feels at times like we do the venting and treat the venting and being angry and hurt like the ultimate goal, and just stew in those feelings without trying to move through them

Thank you for sharing that, that’s a really nice quote and be reflecting on that for a bit I think, it’s something I could use to internalize a bit better right now

If you read the book, he explains that you can’t avoid pain and suffering. That’s just life. It’s not about avoiding pain and just pretending to be happy. It’s about choosing to smile upon the pain, because it will always be there and we are given the choice to dwell or smile.

Pain is stubbing your toe on the chair leg. Suffering is choosing to be mad at the chair.

Talk about forming a union. If for no other reason it gives you a legally protected way to talk about how shit your job is to your coworkers, how poor your manager is, and then go for things that actually matter; real job descriptions, pay increases, real medical insurance at affordable rates, real PTO, real accountability policy consistency, etc.

Going through that kind of exercise will empower you more than you ever thought, bring you joy, and show you life doesn’t have to be riding on someone else’s train to hell.
