Don’t have high expectations of the first session, they usually just ask a million questions due to legalities. The second session is when the fun starts.

I’m very happy for you! Remember that therapy is also work. You have to listen to the feedback you’re getting and even if it means facing truths about yourself you don’t like. You can’t change something if you don’t recognized and admit where you are today. You have to put in the work. It DOES help!

Talking with a therapist is like talking to a lawyer. You need to tell them everything no matter how embarrassing or terrible it is. That’s the only way they can truly help you.

Fuck yeah therapy! Be patient, it takes time. But every time you go, you’re growing. It’s like lifting heavy weights at the gym - just once won’t make you ripped, it takes consistent work to achieve your goals.

Also, don’t be afraid to shop around for a different therapist if you don’t click with this one. It took me five or six therapists before I finally found the perfect fit.

How do you know when you achieve this? I’ve only had one. We get along, I get good advice, starting to feel like a broken record though but that’s the part where I need to remember every little thing I guess, instead of being reminded.

In my case I felt like my other therapists could never understand me on a deep level because they were too “normal”. Once I found a therapist who was a huge nerd and understood how my identity as a nerd shaped my life, everything clicked into place. (Bear in mind that I grew up in a time when being a nerd was considered a bad thing). He also specializes in LGBTQ+ care so he was able to understand my transition easily.

Basically it just makes sense for me when he asks “How did that make you feel?” And I can respond with “Like rolling a 1 on an easy DC check.” and he gets it.

Also if at all possible and it doesn’t work out woth the first therapist try another (and maybe another). I know it can be an absurd amount of work to get a therapist but for me it took like four or five until t really clicked but then it was kinda scary how good ot was.
