We have kind of already seen a worse version of this already with USSR. Stalin was an Authoritarian Totalitarian™ and the west was not happy about that. Khrushchev was anti-Stalin but the west was not happy about that either. Gorbachev destroyed USSR to appease the west but they were not happy about that either. He opened up both the economy and political leadership according to western demands but they were still not happy. Following the mass murder of glasnost and perestroika Putin consolidated his position riding the wave of nationalist fervor and we know how that went with the west. God knows what it will take to make them happy. (Hint: It’s replacing the ruling class with one that is US’ stooge that will deindustrialise Russia, possibly Balkanise them and reduce them to a colony that is nothing but a source of raw materials and low value adding labour.)
You forgot the alcoholic put in power after the dismantlement of the USSR wasnt enough, thus Putin came into the picture.
It’s amazing to me how the west never considers the idea that people living in a particular place have their own agency, and that there will be a response to their meddling.
Following the mass murder of glasnost and perestroika
Could you direct me towards some reading material on this? My in-depth study of Soviet history hasn’t gotten past early Khrushchev
I don’t know any readings about it. Sorry. I hope someone else can help. I only have a gist of what went on after the collapse of the USSR by hearing about it from here and there. The anecdotes about pensions being wiped out, massive inflation and evisceration of public services are well known and its effects are shown well by simple stats like avg life expectancy.
Oh no worries, I know there was a massive drop in life expectancy when the Soviet Union was dismantled but I just hadn’t heard of mass murder during glastnost and perestroika
You can find several sources in Prolewiki:
