It’s really interesting to see so many communities move to piefed.social. I’ve always been a proponent of spreading out the fediverse though, shame it’s all the flagship piefed instance. Is there a generic piefed instance that isn’t .social?

https://piefed.ca/ is a new one by the people behind lemmy.ca. I expect more instances will pop up in the near future.

    I moved !casualconversation@piefed.social and !fedigrow@lemmy.zip

I still have to move !movies@lemm.ee and !ask@lemm.ee, probably at some point next week

My biggest community is hosted on slrpnk and that’s as down as can be right now.

    Luckily I didn’t host anything on lemm.ee

!WomensStuff@lazysoci.al has lost members recently idk why. From what I gather from other comments, the subscribers figure yoyos. We’re still doing well though and I’m helped by some brilliant people.

I’ve taken over !lemmybewholesome@lemmy.world and I’m looking forward to expanding and growing that.

As someone who does not subscribe to WomensStuff, so I only have general advice for you:

      • If you or your instance (still forget the specifics) is opted into Lemmy Federate, then the bot drops a subscription when a real user subscribes. If that real user unsubscribes, I’m not sure the bot picks it back up.
      • People deleting their accounts or getting banned from an instance, perhaps? Not sure if banning from an instance drops all the user’s subscriptions there.
      • Fatigue or dislike with the posts there.
      • Maybe just plain old federation issues? I know I have a community where my subscription is still pending, because the instance has massive federation issues.

It happens. I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless it drops a good fraction and stays down.

!crpg@lemmy.world is doing relatively well, albeit it’s mostly me doing the posting. Let’s how much it can grow in the next few months.

!tycoon@lemmy.world is seeing slow, but stable growth.

Moved most of the community to different instance but still trying to find a place for !randomactofgaming@lemm.ee and CassetteeFuturism. (Don’t want to repeat the mistake of making too much communities on a single instance)

edit: a lot of this is wrong. See my reply.

I’m still up in the air about what to do with !aom@lemm.ee. My first instinct was to take this as an opportunity for consolidation and to try to grow an RTS community by posting to !rts@reddthat.com.

But it doesn’t look great right now. In the original community I could pretty reliably get at least 2 or 3 upvotes indicating people saw it and appreciated it, in this new community I’m getting nothing. And neither is the sole other poster, @reddthat@reddthat.com, who was posting to it. And the other related communities, !strategygames@sopuli.xyz and !realtimestrategy@lemmy.world are even more devoid of response.

So I’m wondering if part of the issue is that reddthat may be too small of an instance and many users may not be able to find it due to federation issues. And maybe I should take the opportunity to sync over to Piefed, or launch a community in one of the instances recommended by @Illecors@lemmy.cafe or @DosDude@retrolemmy.com in the community’s announcement post (or go with my initial idea of lemmy.zip).

But obviously the issue can’t only be the size of the instance, since even the two larger existing instances are seeing so much less engagement than the one I’m moving away from. I’m at a bit of a loss as to why this could be and what to do.

if you think the problem with the rts comm from reddthat is that it isnt federated with many instances you could use the lemmy-federate so it gets federated with all instances allowed by reddthat.

also maybe you could crosspost to some active gaming comms so people see that there is an rts comm

Yeah I actually pointed out in a comment that I posted presumably after you loaded the page (only a few minutes before your comment was made) that the problem was me. I hadn’t subscribed, so my instance wasn’t federated with it.

Thanks for that link though. I knew that tool existed but couldn’t remember the name or URL of it and couldn’t find the last time I had seen it discussed. I like the idea of crossposting the bigger news, too.

      🤦‍♂️

Ok that’s on me. I wasn’t subscribed to the community, so my instance wasn’t getting any federation through. Still, I dunno if I should be nervous or not about reddthat’s longevity. It does seem to be a single-user instance, which feels risky.

Single user? We have 300+ users who actively call Reddthat home and we won’t be going anywhere. We are nearly cash flow positive thanks to our amazing users and recurring donations.

I’ve seen your posts and as your mod on !aom i’d be happy to make you mod of our !rts community to help grow it!

Edit: I know @reddthat@reddthat.com would love the help

Oh, thanks, and my bad! I looked at “local” from on reddthat.com and only noticed foreign users’ posts, so combining that with the name of the !rts mod made me think they were the instance admin and only active user. Glad to see I was wrong!

I know @reddthat@reddthat.com would love the help

Sure, I’d be happy to! As long as it wouldn’t be stepping on toes.

Has everyone with a lemm.ee community settled to a new location yet?

    Mostly.

For the communities I moderate, I’ve got 4 of 5 done:

    • !space@lemm.ee already consolidated with !space@mander.xyz a couple months ago.
    • !fedigrow@lemm.ee moved to !fedigrow@lemmy.zip (Thanks, Blaze, for your leadership on this one)
    • !disney@lemm.ee consolidated with !disney@lemmy.world (not ideal, might consider !disney@feddit.uk in the future)
    • !beetlejuicing@lemm.ee moved to !beetlejuicing@lemmy.zip
    • !smash@lemm.ee Not sure what to do with this one. I never had grand plans for it, but the community/instance name combo (referencing the “lemme smash” meme) was too good to pass up. The wordplay wouldn’t be the same on another instance. Any suggestions?

For the communities I’m subscribed to, most of which have no active mod, 6 out of 8 have found new homes.

    Suggested:

    • !explainlikeimcalvin@lemm.ee moved to !explainlikeimcalvin@sh.itjust.works
    • !ihadastroke@lemm.ee consolidate to !ihadastroke@lemmy.world
    • !lemmeigh@lemm.ee consolidate to !tragedeigh@lemmy.blahaj.zone
    • !lemmysings@lemm.ee moved to !lemmysings@lemmy.zip
    • !youtubedl@lemm.ee moved to !ytdlp@lemmy.dbzer0.com
    • !bertstrips@lemm.ee moved to !bertstrips@moist.catsweat.com using Mbin’s migration tool (Thanks, @originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com for this one)

    Pending:

    • !theydidthemath@lemm.ee
    • !shittyaskscience@lemm.ee

Any suggestions for these last two, or for !smash@lemm.ee?

I’ve moved 1/2 of my lemm.ee communities to a new instance. It was a tremendous amount of work because I like to have archive posts that can be referenced from inside of lemmy (so had to repost the reference material).

In the future lemmy would benefit from a community backfill mechanism (kinda like piefed, but also with refederation of the backfill)

In the future I would change how I backfill posts, I’d make blank posts with a title like [backfill] or [blank], get them federated for a day or two… then edit the posts for the backfill content. This would be less of a burden on users browsing by NEW getting a absolute tidalwave of archival content they may not like

My migrated community already got a YPTB post (nutrition communities bring out the passion in people), it will probably take a week or two until everything settles down.

Reimporting ban lists into a new community could also benefit from automation.

The move made me think that reference posts should probably be hosted elsewhere once they are mature enough. A bit like https://www.privacyguides.org/en/ which started as a subreddit and then became it’s own thing.

Former 3 year veteran of lemm.ee and I got to say the instance was where I first learned of the federated web.

But as for the people who had to be jerks and the small admin pool, it was doomed to die. But none the less, things were going to end. Even without the problems they had at the end.
