This is just something I’ve noticed and I don’t understand, that being that there seems to be a strange difference between a suspension and a ban.

When someone is banned from the platform, they still completely exist. You can go through all of their posts and all of their comments, and the only difference for them will be that they have a big red bar now at the top and they can’t engage with the platform.

Suspensions are different for some reason though. When someone gets suspended, they are completely wiped off the platform. All of their posts and comments are automatically hidden/removed, and you can’t view their profile anymore. I’ve also noticed that getting a suspension is different for the user too. Instead of just telling you you’ve been banned, your profile picture will for some reason turn back to the default, and every time you click it, a server error message comes up at the top, however you can still click away at it and access your profile and such. But like it doesn’t tell you that your account is suspended. You can only see that message if you try to access that profile on a different account or on an incognito tab.

I’ve also noticed that users never get given a reason for being suspended, or even alerted that they have been, whereas bans usually come with a reason.

What is the reasoning for this difference? One would think that a suspension is lighter than a ban, but it seems like suspensions just like Thanos-snap you off the platform without mercy, whereas a permaban at least keeps your account alive and gives you the chance to appeal. It’s just a really weird discrepancy I’ve noticed and was wondering if anyone has noticed as well, or even knows why?

Having been through 3 perm bans and reinstatements, I have never heard of a suspension and wiping out your account. I have had “X” amount of days “suspended”. But during my perm bans all my previous account activity was visible. Even my favorite list of groups remained. I just couldn’t post or comment.

I thought suspension is when they ban your account from the site for X amount of days. Rather then a perma ban which is banned from the site entirely forever

it can be both, reddit has been giving the message of permantly suspended, temp suspended to users before. also if you check out a persons profile it also says suspended sometimes.

i think the chronic, shadowban evaders get the “we cannot find your profile”

oh reddit not giving a reason for a ban, is quite recent lol, they have been systematically banning people left and right, alot are legitimate bans, but they also moved onto innocent users too.

they are Using AI moderation so it bans even more and faster than before.

comment removal from a sub, can trigger a filter and flag your account to be banned down the line or immediately. using reddit is a time bomb anyways, you will get ban for nor reason down the line.

I’ve noticed that as well. Sometimes I’ll have a solid 3-day streak of making a new account and using it without any issues, and then the instant I get a post removed from a sub for breaking some obscure rule, the AI will seek me out like sharks in water and suspend me instantly

Regarding your point about them using AI with their new across the board Auto moderator - I wasn’t banned for this BUT my comment was flagged and removed by reddit admins. “Considering all the Jews murdered during the Holocaust” — now there is zero wrong with that comment but just because the word “murdered” is in the comment Auto Mod considers this calling for violence.

my last account, a mod removed the comment because i was responding to a joke, he thought it wasnt a joke so he took it personally. dint get banned, but i did have run ins with the mods. i believed even blocked some of them because they were gatekeeping a shoddy online card game.(PTGCL). i think i was flagged by thier filters, when i changed to a firefox fork, instant “require to change your password” than instant shadowban. i think this is a new trick they are using to have more info about you so its easier to recognize your accounts.

any hot topic words at the moments can get you banned: jews, blacks, referring to a girl or guy as a him or her if they are trans, even if its an accident.

Suspended is the shadowban. It explicitly hidden from the victim as it’s meant to target spammers who should it realize they’ve been caught

Don’t read too much into downvotes. People downvote things on lemmy for most random reasons. We have also caught multiple bot networks downvoting things.

You can disable the visibility of downvotes in your settings or join an instance where downvotes are automatically disabled like lemmy.blahaj.zone
