Probably true. TEMU is personally also my most downloaded app. I’ve downloaded TEMU 3 time this year. Never opened it. Always uninstalled it immediately.

It installs automatically on some Samsung phones. I think it’s after system updates. The Samsung store will pop up and recommend some apps. It then installs TEMU regardless of what you choose.

It’s not about cheap crap, it’s about the predatory nature of almost all apps shown and how well-known it is that they’re ethically bad.

People love convenience. And most can’t be assed to get everything from ethical sources.

Just try going to a grocery store and buy tropical fruit that wasn’t picked by slaves or heavily exploited farmers.

Sure, it’s not impossible but it’s way easier and cheaper to go for the big brands.

Not with the current political climate I’m afraid. Still hoping for a shift to the left, as our right wing parties just showed they are completely incompetent. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst though.

It’s expensive. Don’t forget to buy the floor for your apartment.

Edit: I’m serious about the floor. Apartments don’t come with flooring included.

Yeah, what’s up with Latvia? Why would people mass-download a grocery store app? Besides, iki is better. At least it was 10 years ago. Do they still have iki?

I’m from Latvia. I have the app, but I don’t believe for 1 second that it’s the most downloaded one. Hell, half the country doesn’t even like that grocery store and would much rather go to Rimi.

I don’t remember Rimi. Is it new or was it just small back then? The two main ones were Maxima and iki.

Yeah, Iki was a loong time ago. Rimi has been the “main” grocery store for quite some time. Maxima has gathered a reputation of being a bit trashier, but also cheaper.

can it though, or just claims to be able to? as I know no apps without root privileges cqn do such things. unless it just searches things in the gallery recycle bin, in which case it is again useless because the gallery app can be used for that

I used it once when I noticed a hammock underquilt - something I’d been looking for (it’s basically a thermal layer for your hammock so your butt doesn’t freeze at night). For context, these can cost from 50€ to several hundred.

It did all the stupid prize wheel things and offered the typical bs it usually does. However it made me an offer - buy 6 items and the underquilt will be included free. It didn’t specify any prices or the typical “cheapest item is free”, so I bought 6 of the cheapest things I could find (something like 50 hair ties for 0.50€, a pizza knife for 1€ etc).

I got the underquilt (and some random things) for ~6€ and, surprisingly, it works extremely well, even for quite cold weather!

Never used the app again, though. After the initial offers to get you hooked, the prices are usually worse than buying locally or just using AliExpress.

I don’t know if it was the case in other countries but in Belgium a very popular app used to store loyalty cards was bought by Klarna. It was not really clear that you could continue to use the old app for a while and not switch to Klarna. So I know a lot of people that just installed the app just to be able to have access to their cards.

Not just support it but sometimes it’s the only option, so you also have to support their business even if you just paying upfront. (and hand over your personal data)
