Hi all! I’m getting decent at sewing and regularly wear clothes that I’ve sewn, but I still consider myself a novice when it comes to understanding fabrics. I’m primarily an online shopper which makes things a bit tough of course. I also like to steer toward natural fibers when possible.
Anyway, today my question has to do with drape. I really like wearing linen because of the breathability in summer, but it is not very drapey at all. Do you have any patterns or types of garments that you like to wear or sew that use fabric without a lot of drape?
If it matters (which, perhaps it doesn’t – this thread can be for all!), I’m a cis woman with a fairly classic style leaning feminine. I also have a short waist which is the bane of my existence, so I avoid anything that visually cuts me at the waist. I have even drafted the waist seam out of a dress pattern (it went great!).

With linen one of my classmates is making what I think in English is called a duster coat, it is looking good.
wide legged pants, summer dresses, shorts, button up shirts… you can do a lot of things with linen ! also note that it will get a bit softer after a few washes, so do not panic if it looks a bit too stiff fresh from the machine.
as an example I’ve made a really cute a-line dress, which keeps its shape nicely with the linen, but if you like a layering piece a wide and baggy button up shirt might be a good idea.discussion of body shape.
This dress also has the best ever trick I found for my short waist: just lower the waist of the garnement. on this piece it’s about 2-3cm lower than my natural waist, and accordingly a bit wider so it sits comfortably. I must admit that the stripes helps with the illusion, but generally, this trick works best with dresses. (I also have a “high” waisted pant pattern which does the same and it’s finnicky to draft and really doesn’t do well with weight changes)
