I guess I’m back. I took a month off and didn’t really miss it while touching grass but then I broke my toe and waded back into online BS.

veganhomecooks.com is still open for registrations if anyone is interested. It is a pixelfed instance but to be honest, pixelfed is even more beta than Lemmy. Maybe next try will be akkoma or mastodon, vote below on what VTC should try next.

I’ve been hiking and cooking so I post mainly about that now. Also some memes heh. How are you all doing? What is new?

My ex/close friend necked himself. Didn’t die cause his wife found him in time and being a med school dropout has advantages.

Been reevaluating a lot of shit since then. I think I’m going back to grad school, I realised if I lost him (and you don’t go from trying to kill yourself to life being peachy. It’s still very day by day) I would have basically no regular contact with people smarter than me which is just depressing.

Who knows if I’ll succeed this time, life is in a better place but my body is a complete unreliable wreck. Still we shall see.

In other news evaluating the risk of moving my ulnar nerves surgically. Very small risk of paralysis, large (~10% risk) of needing salvage surgeries. Scary stuff, expensive too. OTOH being able to hold a book again would be cool.

Thanks, I do too. He’s far from perfect but he is a good man and he brings a lot to the world. It’s crap to see him struggling so much and in such dire straights because of a brief interruption of his ability to improve the profits of shareholders.

I was handing out propaganda with an academic, and apparently I made an impression as he sent me an extremely helpful email today with a variety of positions on offer. That is defs a confidence boost and it’s great to have help there.

I’ll be right, they are the ones that have to go through the hard shit. People you love nearly dying does tend to make a lot of stuff just seem not important though.

Also a massive stressor preceding this was the tech ai layoffs to eviction pipeline so I’ve ended up even more angry at landlords and other capitalists. Like this shit is playing out everywhere so some dickhead can get more spare homes. I don’t even know if the rich are human in a recognisable way.

I have given up my beloved cute as hell office chair (this one: https://pin.it/6MECQQHKk ) and bought one that supports proper posture, as well as a monitor stand as I am getting old and sitting wrong hurts. To be clear, all you whippersnappers should practice good ergonomics too!

I don’t work from home or anything like that, but my office (slash the guest room) is my little sanctuary and I’ve decided to spruce it up a bit, including cable management and replacing the landlord special blinds that were in place when we moved here 4 years ago.

I’m sad to throw away my old chair which I have had for 6 or 7 years, but it’s fake leather fabric is coming apart where I tried to clean it and I don’t think anyone would want it.

    • When the pandemic first struck I had an Amazons basic chair that I didn’t use that often because I was always in my office and within 2 months I got the worst back pain of my life so I located a used office supply store near where I live and got a herman miller aeron and it went away. I have the full ergonomics set up now including keyboard trey at arm level, a foot stool, high quality chair and monitor stand to keep it at eye level lol

Lots and lots of plant things happening.

I’ve started collecting succulents which has spiraled out of control as it often does. There are way too many beautiful varieties and I can’t help myself when I find neglected plants. We’ve had a lot of rain this year and all the outdoor succulents at the local stores are drowning in their pots. It’s hard not to bring one or five home every time I leave the house…

A bunch of the indoor plants became outdoor plants when the temps warmed up and everything is popping off. I’ve already been harvesting potatoes and onions, and the strawberries are putting out ripe fruit daily now. All kinds of other veggies are either started or well into their growth and I’m already running out of space to add new things. It’s a good problem to have!

And in other news, our neighbors cat had kittens recently and they tossed them outside so I’ve been spending a lot of my free time playing with them. I spent yesterday setting up a bed for them and gave them bowls of food and water. They probably need to be wormed and definitely have fleas. One or two of them may eventually make it into the house but we’re enjoying getting to know them as friends. There are 2 males and 2 females, all adorable. The boys are very adventurous and friendly, the girls are a bit more guarded. Slowly but surely we’re winning them over. I just wish they would stop digging in my plants! Bug netting used as ground cover seems to be working for now.

Back when I lived in Tehrangeles the coolest thing was all the succulents that were everywhere I had no idea there were so many besides cactus. I really loved the ones that almost looked like sea corals. By the beach in Santa Monica the rich people had some of the most amazing displays in their front yard. I really should have stolen some.

      Congrats on cat friends!

I miss grass. It’s coming back soon, I’m sure. Things are starting to bud at the potato house.

Pixelfed is kind of annoying on my phone (it’s hard to comment or reply to comments) so I’m down for whatever. I don’t know enough about the fedverse to be able to suggest something.

I’m always happy to see your memes - you excel at shitposting 👑

I’ve been trying to take better care of myself and my family and we’re going to try and make dinner together on Sundays instead of just hobbling together each meal from various parts around the house (i.e. bulk cooked beans, rice, etc.). I’ve also started taking my B12 daily because I am old and not invincible anymore and no longer knocking back energy drinks like I used to.

As for gardening: We have some seeds started but it’s time to start planning in earnest, I need to get the annuals started soon or they won’t be big enough to plant when it’s time. I generally don’t plant before June 1 due to frost risk. Things like peas should be getting out there now, maybe I’ll try and get some in tomorrow.

But I’m just going to smoke weed and eat greens for the rest of the night 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sitting down for dinner intentionally is a good habit to have. I’ve been doing it since 2020 and now its just part of my day. It is something I missed from being young and glad that my family does it now and is some of our most important bonding time, even if we’re just eating beans and rice.
