  • I’ve been playing around with Japanese Maples. I know practically nothing about them but we have some adult trees on the property that my partner adores so I started learning and experimenting. I started a few weeks ago gathering seeds, and shortly after had a few little maple saplings. Since I have no self control when it comes to plants the numbers quickly swelled and I don’t actually know how many trees I have anymore. We have some larger saplings/baby trees that I dug up and brought inside, I started a bunch more seeds, took cuttings of our adult trees, and I transplanted tons of the little maples growing in my garden spaces. Now I have them growing in all sorts of different mediums, planted in little maple gardens, and I started playing around with making bonsai trees. Oops.

I think I mentioned kittens in another one of these updates? Two of them are now part of our family, and the other animals are slowly coming to accept that they all share the house now. We ended up taking in the two female kittens after we saw their dad trying to mount one of them… Spending time getting to know them has been really fulfilling. The one that was the most shy has become my little girl. She’s very vocal and affectionate and unbelievably brave. Every day her and her sister do so many things that make us smile and laugh and it’s a joy to have them around. Their brothers still roam the neighborhood and come to visit us regularly. I’ve had to change my vegetable setups outside to keep the cats from trying to use them as litter boxes. A bit annoying but I think we’ve got it solved now.

Garden stuff is all going crazy. I swear the peas double in height every other day. Indoor mint and balm plants are all being cut at least once a week and it’s already more than we can store. Makes for lots of delicious drinks though! The beans and other edible plants are all doing really well thanks to a lot of rain and a humid spring. The decorative stuff is doing well too. We started a jumbo Elephant Ear bulb this year that has probably 20cm of green bits sticking out from the middle and some smaller growth popping through the dirt from the sides. I’m hoping the growth really explodes once some leaves make it out and open up to soak in the sunlight. Succulents are all doing great indoors and out. I’m doing my best to not buy more by directing that energy towards the maples lol.
