This whole situation is so goddamn stupid. I’m not even clear what the moron thinks this will accomplish. You can’t build industry overnight nor convince people to work jobs they don’t want to work for unacceptable pay. There are certainly ways to increase manufacturing within the US, but it doesn’t have shit to do with any other country.

The best way to bring manufacturing back to America is to promote labor rights abroad. Instead of dragging other countries industries down with TARRIFS, lift the workers of the world up, so they’re no longer undercutting each other in the labor market.

Reward companies in America that make products with union labor, regardless of if those unions are American or not.

The best take I’ve heard so far is this: there is no strategy. Pulling the levers is the point unto itself. He likes tariffs. Like most things, he doesn’t understand how they work. Maybe he thinks China pays them. But it’s not part of some economic plan. Clearly. Trying to sort it out is to delve into the twisted mind of a dim-witted narcissist.

He’s not trying to accomplish anything. The effects however, may entertain him. Every justification is post-hoc.

He might be an idiot but he’s still useful. The tariffs are another price increase, he gets to bluster and blame other governments and leaders for the prices while working class folks adjust to the new costs. Then businesses unaffected by tariffs get to raise their prices commensurately. And if the tariffs get canceled the prices can stay up. Just like with COVID his first term

It’s corruption plain and simple. Just follow the money.

Republicans cream themselves over regressive taxes. Now imagine you get to put in place a tax that ultimately gets passed directly to consumers but you can claim you are helping the workers. On top of that you also have the power to make exemptions for items or even whole industries / businesses.

You want an exemption for your business to import goods… sure donate a million dollars to my PAC and it’s done.

Your CEO bad mouthed our dear leader… fuck you, time to make an exemption that favors your competitors.

When Trump stated he idolized President McKinley, it was the graft and the dirty politics from that era he idolized.
